Inconel 718 is commonly used in the maritime and aerospace industries for its strength and durability, particularly in engine rotating parts such as disks, fan blades and high-pressure compressors. As a new 3D printing technology, directed energy deposition (DED) can use lasers to melt metal powder or wires to create workpieces of any shape directly from customized data, making processing more collaborative and intuitive. However, the surface properties of DED printed Inconel 718 samples, such as surface roughness and abrasion resistance, are generally below standard. Ultrasonic nanocrystal surface modification (UNSM) can be used as a post-processing method by introducing severe plastic deformation near the surface and leading to property changes. Uniaxial tensile testing shows that UNSM-treated Inconel 718 has higher mechanical properties. Additionally, higher wear resistance of UNSM treated Inconel 718 was observed using a fuse test rig according to the flat-top cylinder protocol. This study uses the finite element method to fully understand the impact of UN forces on wear performance.
