The commonly used 718 alloy can be divided into two categories by strength, AMS specification 718 with a yield strength of 150ksi, and NACE specification 718 with a yield strength of 120ksi. Alloy 718 is a precipitation hardenable nickel-based alloy that exhibits high yield, tensile and creep cracking strengths at elevated temperatures up to 704°C. Alloy 718 has a slow age-hardening response, so it does not harden as it is heated and cooled during annealing and welding. Compared to other nickel-based superalloys with aluminium and titanium additions, alloy 718 has excellent weldability.

Inconel 718 high temperature alloy is an aging strengthened nickel-iron based high temperature alloy, which is widely used in aviation, aerospace, nuclear energy, petroleum and other fields due to its good high temperature organisational stability, oxidation corrosion resistance and welding performance, excellent fatigue and creep resistance, etc. The reinforcing phases in Inconel 718 alloy are mainly γ' phase (Ni3AlTi), γ″ phase (Ni3Nb) and δ phase (Ni3Nb), γ' phase is the auxiliary reinforcing phase, γ″ phase is the main reinforcing phase, and δ phase is formed by the substable γ″ phase. Ni3Nb) and δ-phase (Ni3Nb), γ' phase is an auxiliary reinforcing phase, γ″-phase is the main reinforcing phase, and δ-phase is a stable phase formed by the transformation of substable γ″-phase at high temperatures (more than 650 ℃) for a long time [4-8]. In addition to the strengthening phase, Inconel 718 alloy is also prone to Laves phase ((NiCrFe) 2NbMoTi), Laves phase is formed due to the elemental segregation caused by the moulding process, and a large amount of strengthening element Nb will be consumed in the process of Laves phase formation.
