Products Properties

Why is 1.4310 known as "spring-grade stainless steel"?

1.4310 (Grade 301) stainless steel is an ultra-high-strength austenitic alloy that offers excellent shape control during laser cutting and etching processes. At room temperature, Grade 301 (1.4310) stainless steel exhibits high strength and good corrosion resistance. With a nominal composition of 17% chromium and 7% nickel, it is suitable for applications requiring tensile strengths of up to 1800 MPa and is available in various temper levels ranging from 1/16 Hard to Full Hard. Commonly used in welding, forming, and deep-drawing processes, 1.4310 stainless steel is particularly well-suited for manufacturing components subjected to significant mechanical stress. We supply 301 thin foil cut to customer-specified lengths and offer processing services to manufacture precision laser-cut parts directly from coil stock.

What are the main differences between 1.4310 and 1.4319?

1.4310 (AISI 301) is the industry-standard material for spring manufacturing, thanks to its exceptionally high work-hardening rate, which allows it to achieve very high tensile strength through cold rolling. 1.4319 (AISI 302) is a high-carbon variant of 304 steel, suitable for applications requiring general corrosion resistance and moderate strength. Today, 1.4310 is far more popular and widely available in the spring application market.

FAQ

Q: Can 1.4310/1.4319 be welded?
A: Yes, but welding 1.4310 in its spring-tempered state (i.e., strengthened by cold working) is not recommended. The heat generated during welding disrupts the microstructure formed by cold working, causing the material to lose its high strength and spring properties in the heat-affected zone (HAZ).

Q: Are these materials magnetic?
A: Yes. Although they are austenitic stainless steels, the cold-working process-necessary to achieve spring-grade hardness-induces a phase transformation into martensite, making the material magnetic. The higher the hardness (temper level), the stronger the magnetism.

Q: Can the hardness of 1.4310 be increased through heat treatment?
A: No, its hardness cannot be increased via quenching and tempering processes like those used for carbon steel. However, after forming the spring, you can perform a "stress-relief anneal" (low-temperature stress relief) at approximately 250°C–350°C. This process stabilizes material properties and enhances both the elastic limit and fatigue life.

Q: What are the typical dimensional tolerance ranges for these coils?
A: For precision applications, tolerances should be specified in accordance with EN 9445 or ASTM A480 standards. For precision stamping, please clearly define the thickness tolerance requirements (e.g., ±0.01 mm or ±0.02 mm).

Q: Is the 1.4310 grade corrosion-resistant?
A: It offers good corrosion resistance, though slightly less than that of 304 stainless steel. Due to the high internal stresses induced by cold working, the material is susceptible to stress corrosion cracking if used in harsh, chloride-containing environments without proper passivation or protective coating.
