The process of forging flange steel begins with the selection of high - quality steel billets. These billets are heated to a specific temperature range, usually above the recrystallization temperature of the steel. This makes the steel more malleable and easier to shape.
Once heated, the billets are placed on a forging press or under a forging hammer. The compressive forces exerted on the billet cause it to take the shape of the die cavity, which is designed to produce the flange shape. The forging process can be either open - die forging or closed - die forging.
In open - die forging, the billet is placed between two flat dies and is shaped by repeated blows or pressure. This method is often used for larger and more complex flange shapes. Closed - die forging uses two or more dies that enclose the billet and give it a more precise shape. After forging, the flange is usually heat - treated to improve its mechanical properties such as strength and hardness.
