The high alloy content of 904L alloy gives it excellent resistance to uniform corrosion.

904L alloy was originally developed to resist corrosion in dilute sulfuric acid and is one of the few that maintains complete corrosion resistance over the entire concentration range of 0-100% and at temperatures up to 95°F (35°C) of stainless steel. 904L also has good corrosion resistance against many inorganic acids (such as phosphoric acid) and most organic acids. However, acids and acid solutions containing halogen ions are very corrosive and the corrosion resistance of 317L, 317LMN and 904L may not be sufficient.

Fractionated tall oil generally requires materials superior to 316L and the more commonly used 317MN. In these hot concentrated alkaline solutions, the corrosion resistance of the material is mainly determined by its nickel content. Due to its high nickel content of 25%, 904L has proven to be an excellent substitute for most traditional stainless steels.

Traditional stainless steels such as 304L and 316L are susceptible to chloride stress corrosion cracking under certain conditions. Chloride stress corrosion cracking resistance increases with increasing nickel and molybdenum content. Therefore, higher performance super austenitic stainless steels such as 904L have higher resistance to chloride stress corrosion cracking.
