A peculiarity of this alloy grade is that once hardened, the AISI 440C threaded bar could hold a sharp edge and combats corrosion. Moreover, it is possible to achieve a near mirror finish, by ordering a procedure as simple as polishing. Compared to austenitic grades, the 440C stainless steel rods are known to exhibit moderate corrosion resistance properties, especially if compared to alloy 304.
Although it is possible to harden this grade of stainless steel through the use of a heat treatment procedure, machining is preferable to practise on the DIN 1.4125 square bar. This is because in an annealed condition it is easy to machine the ss 440C bright bar as it tends to become extremely difficult once the alloy has been hardened.
