Description

Type 316 is an austenitic chromium-nickel stainless steel containing molybdenum. This addition improves general corrosion resistance, increases resistance to pitting corrosion from chloride ion solutions, and provides greater strength at elevated temperatures. Properties are similar to Type 304/304L, but the alloy is slightly stronger at elevated temperatures. Corrosion resistance is improved, especially against sulfuric acid, hydrochloric acid, acetic acid, formic acid and tartaric acid; acidic sulfates and alkaline chlorides. Type 316L is an ultra-low carbon version of Type 316 that minimizes harmful carbide precipitation during welding.

316L stainless steel wire or 1.4404 is a lower carbon version of 1.4401, which has excellent corrosion resistance, especially in environments where resistance to salt water and chloride corrosion is critical. Due to its widespread use in marine environments, it is often referred to as marine grade. 316L retains its strength at sub-freezing temperatures, making it one of the most common stainless steels.
