In-depth analysis of industry knowledge on 06Cr19Ni10 (China GB standard) and SS304 (US ASTM/AISI standard)
1: Material Fundamentals and Standard Systems
| Item | 06Cr19Ni10 (GB/T 20878) | SS304 (ASTM A240/AISI 304) |
|---|---|---|
| Chemical Composition | C≤0.08%, Cr18.0–20.0%, Ni8.0–10.5% | C≤0.08%, Cr18.0–20.0%, Ni8.0–10.5% |

06Cr19Ni10 vs SUS304: Comparison of welding technology
1. Welding materials and process versatility
Welding material selection:
06Cr19Ni10: Follow GB/T 983, commonly used welding rod E308-16, welding wire H0Cr21Ni10 (in accordance with GB/T 14957).
SS304: Follow AWS standard, welding rod E308-16 (AWS A5.4), welding wire ER308 (AWS A5.9), the composition is equivalent to domestic welding materials (such as Ni ≥ 8.0%, Cr ≥ 19.5%), and can be mixed across standards.
Process parameters:
Consistent heat input control: recommended current 100-150A (φ3.2mm welding rod), voltage 20-25V, welding speed 8-12cm/min, interlayer temperature ≤ 150℃, to prevent intergranular corrosion and thermal cracking.
Shielding gas: pure Ar (99.99%) or Ar+2% O₂ are recommended. The former is used for mirror welds, and the latter improves the fluidity of the molten pool.
06Cr19Ni10 vs SUS304: Comparison of bending processing technology
1. Mechanical properties and processing characteristics
Commonality:
Yield strength ≥ 205MPa, elongation ≥ 40%, excellent cold bending performance, and work hardening rate of about 15-20% during bending (increases with deformation).
Minimum bending radius: When the plate thickness t≤3mm, Rmin≈1t (annealed state); when t>3mm, Rmin≈1.5-2t, to avoid cracking caused by excessive hardening.
06Cr19Ni10 vs SUS304: Surface Treatments by Industry
| Industry | Typical Treatment for SS304 | Typical Treatment for 06Cr19Ni10 |
|---|---|---|
| Food Machinery | Electropolishing (Ra≤0.2μm) + Chromium-Free Passivation (ASTM A967) | Mechanical Polishing (Ra≤0.8μm) + Pickling and Passivation (GB/T 4334) |
| Architectural Decoration | Fluorocarbon Coating (Film Thickness 40–60μm) + Fingerprint-Resistant Treatment | Sandblasting (Surface Roughness Ra12.5–25μm) + Powder Coating (GB/T 18719) |
| Medical Equipment | Nano-Ceramic Coating (Thickness 2–5μm) + Ethylene Oxide Sterilization | Electropolishing (Ra≤0.5μm) + High-Pressure Steam Sterilization (GB 18278) |
06Cr19Ni10 Vs SUS304: Price
Material cost: The price difference between SS304 and 06Cr19Ni10 is about 5-10%, which is mainly affected by the fluctuation of nickel price (for example, when the nickel price is 15,000 US dollars/ton in 2024, the cost per ton will increase by about 800 yuan).
Processing cost: The processing cost of SS304 in North America is 15-20% higher than that of 06Cr19Ni10, mainly due to ASME certification and precision mold costs; the bending cost of 06Cr19Ni10 in China is 30% lower, but the surface treatment cost is 10% higher.
