1.4057 stainless steel chemical composition

What material is 1.4057 X17CrNi16 2?

X17CrNi16-2 is a martensitic stainless steel, a chromium-nickel alloy with a chromium content of 15-17%, equivalent to 1.4057, BS 431S29, and AISI 431. Due to its high chromium content, this stainless steel exhibits better corrosion resistance and toughness than comparable steels with lower chromium content. It has a tensile strength of 800-950 N/mm² (+QT800 heat-treated condition) and a density of 7.0 kg/dm³ (room temperature). Because of its high strength and corrosion resistance, this steel is used to manufacture mechanical parts subjected to high mechanical stresses, such as piston rods.

What is the composition of 1.4057 stainless steel?

1.4057 stainless steel (also known as AISI 431) is primarily composed of chromium (15.0-18.0%), nickel (2.0-3.0%), and carbon (0.12-0.22%). It also contains a maximum of 1.0% manganese, 1.0% silicon, 0.04% phosphorus, and 0.03% sulfur.

Is 1.4057 Stainless Steel Magnetic?

Yes, 1.4057 stainless steel is magnetic because it is a martensitic stainless steel. Martensitic and ferritic stainless steels are generally magnetic, while austenitic stainless steels are generally non-magnetic.

What is the density of 1.4057 stainless steel?

The density of 1.4057 stainless steel is approximately 7.85 g/cm³ (or 7850 kg/m³). This is a common density value, but the exact value can vary slightly due to minor differences in composition and processing.

UNS S43100 Weldability

Welding 431, UNS S43100, S80, X17CrNi6-2, and 1.4057 martensitic stainless steels is difficult due to their susceptibility to cracking. Preheating the material to 200-300°C before welding and performing a post-weld heat treatment at 650°C is recommended. 410 grade welding wire can be used, but using 308L, 309, or 310 grade steel will yield a tougher weld.

1.4057 Martensitic Stainless Steel Machining

431, UNS S43100, S80, X17CrNi6-2, and 1.4057 martensitic stainless steels are easy to machine in the annealed state. However, if the hardness of these steels exceeds 30 HRC, machining becomes extremely difficult.

What is the Price of 1.4057 (X17CrNi16-2) (R18) Stainless Material?

A recent online source indicates that the market price for 1.4057 stainless steel (also known as X17CrNi16-2 / R18) round bar is around USD 2.80–4.50 per kilogram, depending on diameter, finish, heat treatment and order quantity.
