When purchasing 1.4301 stainless steel plates, are you always confused between 2D and 2B surfaces? The difference between the two surfaces directly affects the cost, processing efficiency and use effect. As the most commonly used austenitic stainless steel (corresponding to 304) in EU standards, the 2D and 2B surfaces of 1.4301 are quite different in actual use.
What is 1.4301 2B steel plate?
1.4301 2B plate is cold rolled and bright annealed with a smooth, slightly reflective surface (Ra value ≤ 0.8μm), good corrosion resistance, easy to clean and polished appearance, ideal for exposed applications such as food processing equipment, kitchen countertops, decorative panels and medical devices where hygiene and aesthetics are important.
What is SS 1.4301 2D steel plate?
SS 1.4301 2D plate is hot rolled, annealed and pickled with a matte, non-reflective, slightly rough texture (Ra value of about 1.6-3.2μm), suitable for bending, stamping or welding, suitable for applications such as structural components, pipes or parts that need to be painted/coated. Usually 5%-8% cheaper than 2B steel plate, suitable for applications with limited budget and low surface gloss requirements.

What is the difference between 2B and 1.4301 2D finish stainless steel plate ?
Processing technology
1.4301 2D plate: After hot rolling and annealing, it is pickled. There is no additional cold rolling or bright treatment. The surface is the original state of "hot rolling + pickling".
1.4301 2B plate: On the basis of 2D plate, a cold rolling process is added, and then bright annealing is performed to form a more delicate cold-rolled bright layer on the surface.
Different surface states
2D plate: Matte matte surface, rough touch (Ra value 1.6-3.2μm), with fine grain, easy to adhere to coating or spray paint.
2B plate: Bright surface is slightly reflective, smooth to the touch (Ra value ≤0.8μm), stains are easy to wipe, and there is no sanitary dead corner.
Processing and weldability
2D plate: Better ductility, not easy to crack during bending and stamping, suitable for complex processing (such as 90° bending, deep stamping), and the processing scrap rate is low by 15%-20%.
2B board: slightly higher hardness (about 10% higher than 2D), better flatness, suitable for direct exposure (such as decorative panels), no secondary leveling required.
Cost and Application
2D board: The price is 5%-8% lower than 2B, suitable for scenes with low surface requirements, processing or subsequent coating (such as pipelines, equipment structural parts, and painted shells).
2B board: The cost is slightly higher, but it is suitable for exposed use (such as food workstations, kitchen utensils, and elevator decorations), especially for scenes that require hygiene, easy cleaning, or high quality.
Maintenance Difficulty
2D board: The surface is rough and easy to hide dirt, and cleaning needs to be more frequent. It is not suitable for food contact or high cleanliness environments.
2B board: The smooth surface is highly resistant to dirt and can be wiped with clean water daily. It is easier to meet hygiene standards in scenes such as food factories and laboratories.
