1.4401 vs 1.4571: Chemical Composition & Mechanical Properties

When selecting stainless steel for demanding industrial or chemical applications, understanding the difference between 1.4401 (AISI 316) and 1.4571 (AISI 316Ti) is critical. Though both are molybdenum-alloyed austenitic stainless steels with excellent corrosion resistance, subtle differences in chemical composition and mechanical behavior can significantly affect performance, weldability, and cost-efficiency.

What is 1.4571 steel equivalent to?

1.4571 is the EN equivalent of AISI 316Ti, a titanium-stabilized version of 316 stainless steel. Other equivalents include:

X6CrNiMoTi17-12-2 (DIN)

S31635 (UNS)

ASTM A240 316Ti

What material is equivalent to 1.4401?

1.4401 is the European EN designation for AISI 316 stainless steel, also known as: X5CrNiMo17-12-2 (DIN), UNS S31600 (ASTM/UNS), often used interchangeably with 1.4404 (316L) for the better weldability of the lower carbon version.

What is the difference between 1.4401 and 1.4571 stainless steel?

Corrosion Resistance

Both 1.4401 and 1.4571 are molybdenum-alloyed stainless steels with excellent resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion, especially in chloride-containing environments such as seawater and chemical processing media. Under general industrial corrosion conditions, their performance is similar; however, in prolonged high-temperature or strongly acidic environments, 1.4571 offers better resistance to intergranular corrosion due to its titanium stabilization.

Weldability

1.4401 has good weldability and is commonly used in general structural welding. However, it may become sensitive to intergranular corrosion in thick sections or after exposure to high temperatures. In contrast, 1.4571 contains titanium, which stabilizes carbides and prevents chromium depletion near weld zones, making it more suitable for applications where post-weld corrosion resistance is critical.

Heat Resistance / Heat Treatment

The recommended operating temperature for 1.4401 is generally below 450–500°C, as exposure to higher temperatures may lead to intergranular corrosion. 1.4571, with its titanium-stabilized structure, can withstand higher temperatures-up to approximately 850°C for short-term service-making it ideal for heat exchangers, furnace tubes, and other high-temperature components. Neither grade can be hardened by heat treatment.

Structural Stability

Thanks to titanium stabilization, 1.4571 offers superior structural stability and creep resistance under high-temperature or stress conditions, making it suitable for long-term service in thermal environments. While 1.4401 is structurally stable under standard conditions, it may suffer from grain boundary weakening when subjected to prolonged high-temperature stress, and is not recommended for load-bearing applications at elevated temperatures.
