1.4841 vs 1.4845 stainless steel: High temperature performance

Looking to choose between 1.4841 and 1.4845 stainless steel? These two high-temperature austenitic stainless steels are often compared due to their similar alloy families, but their chemical composition and application performance can significantly impact your decision.

What is 1.4841 Stainless Steel?

1.4841 stainless steel, also known as X15CrNiSi25-21 (EN), is a heat-resistant austenitic stainless steel with high chromium and nickel content. It offers excellent oxidation resistance at elevated temperatures up to 1100–1150°C, making it ideal for furnace parts, heat exchangers, and burner components.

What is 1.4845 Stainless Steel?

1.4845 stainless steel, designated as X8CrNi25-21, is the EN equivalent of AISI 310S. It features lower carbon content (≤0.08%), improving weldability and resistance to intergranular corrosion, while retaining excellent performance at high temperatures.

What is the difference between 1.4841 and 1.4845?

1.4841 vs 1.4845: Chemical Composition Comparison

Property 1.4841 (X15CrNiSi25-21) 1.4845 (X8CrNi25-21)
Carbon (C) ≤ 0.20 ≤ 0.08
Silicon (Si) 1.5–2.5 ≤ 1.5
Nickel (Ni) 19.0–22.0 19.0–22.0
Chromium (Cr) 24.0–26.0 24.0–26.0
Weldability Lower (due to higher C) Better (low carbon)
Sensitization risk Higher Lower

If your application involves welding or requires resistance to intergranular corrosion, 1.4845 is the safer and more reliable option. For maximum high-temp strength and economy in non-welded components, 1.4841 may be acceptable.

Formability Moderate Good

1.4845 stainless steel weldability

1.4845 stainless steel offers good weldability due to its low carbon content (≤0.08%), which significantly reduces the risk of carbide precipitation and intergranular corrosion during welding.
It can be welded using common methods such as TIG, MIG, and MMA without the need for preheating. Post-weld heat treatment is generally not required, although it may be considered in critical high-temperature applications to restore full corrosion resistance. For best results, using filler metals like ER310 or matching alloy types is recommended.
