What is 17-4 PH Stainless Steel?
17-4 PH stainless steel is a precipitation-hardening, martensitic stainless steel with a nominal composition of 17% chromium and 4% nickel. Its strength is enhanced by heat treatment, typically aging at 900°F / 482°C. Also known as UNS S17400 or grade 630, this alloy is widely used in the aerospace, chemical, marine, and petrochemical industries because it maintains good mechanical properties in high stress and mildly corrosive environments.
What is 1.4542 Stainless Steel Equivalent to?
1.4542 stainless steel is the European (EN) designation for 17-4 PH stainless steel. It is also known as X5CrNiCuNb16-4 under EN standards and is equivalent to UNS S17400, AISI 630, or ASTM A564 Type 630 in American standards.

Alloy 17-4PH can be easily welded and processed by standard shop fabrication practices. It is magnetic.
Heat Treatment
Alloy 17-4PH is provided in the solution-annealed condition (Condition A). Mechanical properties may be altered by subsequent age hardening treatments. These aging treatments are referred to as Conditions H900, H1025, H1075, H1150, H1150M and H1150D.

What specifications apply to 17-4PH stainless steel?
ASTM A693,ASME SA693,AMS 5604
Is 17-4PH machinable?
Yes. It machines well in both solution-annealed and precipitation-hardened conditions. Carbide tooling is preferred. Dimensional allowances should be made for post-machining heat treatment if required.
What is the difference between 17-4 PH and 304 stainless steel?
304 has excellent corrosion resistance and formability at a good price, so it's very versatile for most applications. 17-4 PH has the highest hardness and strength in the heat-treated condition - it's about 3 times stronger on tensile strength than 304 – which is why it's perfect for high performance parts.
What is the difference between 17-4 PH and 316L stainless steel?
Unlike 316-L, 17-4PH is weldable as well as magnetic. Although a mirror-like polish is still achievable, it becomes more challenging due to the higher hardness of 17-4PH. Unlike 316-L, 17-4PH exhibits a lower resistance to corrosion
