2205 vs 2507 Duplex Stainless Steel: What’s the Difference?

GNEE is a professional manufacturer and supplier of austenitic stainless steel, martensitic stainless steel, ferritic stainless steel and super duplex steel. Today, we will share some knowledge with you by comparing the following points between the two!

2205 and 2507 mainly refer to two stainless steel materials, S32205/UNS S31803 duplex steel and S25073/UNS S32750 duplex steel.

2205 duplex steel

Mechanical properties
2205 duplex steel:
Tensile strength is about 620MPa
Yield strength is about 450MPa
Elongation is about 25%
Good ductility, suitable for occasions requiring more deformation capacity
2507 duplex steel:
Tensile strength is about 800MPa
Yield strength is about 550MPa
Elongation is about 25%
Higher strength and toughness, especially excellent performance in low temperature environment

Corrosion resistance
2205 duplex steel:
Uniform corrosion: Due to the chromium content (22%), molybdenum (3%) and nitrogen content (0.18%), the corrosion resistance of 2205 is better than 316L and 317L in most environments.
Local corrosion resistance: The content of chromium, molybdenum and nitrogen in 2205 duplex stainless steel makes it highly resistant to pitting and crevice corrosion in oxidizing and acidic solutions.
Corrosion fatigue resistance: The high strength and corrosion resistance of 2205 duplex steel make it have high corrosion fatigue strength. Processing equipment is susceptible to corrosive environments and loading cycles.

2507 is a ferritic-austenitic (duplex) stainless steel that combines many of the most beneficial properties of ferritic and austenitic steels. Due to the high content of chromium and molybdenum in this steel, it has excellent resistance to pitting, crevice and uniform corrosion. The duplex microstructure ensures that the steel has high resistance to stress corrosion cracking and high mechanical strength.

Processing performance
2205 stainless steel plate: Relatively easy to process and weld.

2507 stainless steel plate: Due to its higher alloy content, it is slightly more difficult to process and weld.

Application scenarios
2205 duplex steel:
Commonly used in chemical processing, oil and gas industry, paper industry and marine applications. It is an economical duplex steel suitable for most moderately corrosive environments and mechanical strength requirements.
2507 Duplex Steel:
It is widely used in offshore platforms, seawater treatment equipment, desalination equipment, and chemical processing equipment that requires extremely high corrosion resistance.
