What Is EN 1.4462 Stainless Hollow Section?

EN 1.4462 (UNS S31803 / S32205) is a duplex stainless steel that combines austenitic and ferritic microstructures. Hollow sections made from this alloy offer twice the yield strength of austenitic grades like 304/316, along with improved resistance to pitting, crevice, and stress corrosion cracking-especially in chloride-rich environments.

Key Advantages of EN 1.4462 Hollow Sections

In demanding industries like marine engineering, construction, chemical processing, and offshore platforms, selecting the right material for structural components is key to ensuring safety, performance, and longevity. EN 1.4462 stainless hollow section, also known as Duplex 2205 square and rectangular tube, offers an ideal solution where both mechanical strength and corrosion resistance are essential.

High Strength-to-Weight Ratio

2205 Duplex stainless steel rectangular tubes, with up to twice the yield strength of standard austenitic stainless steels, can reduce structural weight without compromising strength.

Excellent corrosion resistance

1.4462 alloy tubes contain about 22% chromium, about 5% nickel and about 3% molybdenum, which is resistant to seawater, brine, wastewater and industrial chemicals. PREN value is about 34–35.

Good weldability

Compatible with TIG, MIG and SAW welding processes. Low risk of thermal cracking, no post-weld heat treatment required.

Cost-Effective Alternative to 316L or Super Duplex

Offers higher performance than 316L in aggressive environments at a moderate price point-ideal for value engineering.
