How to Select the Right Heat Exchanger Tube ?
Leave a message
In the design of industrial facilities, selecting the appropriate heat exchanger tubes stands as one of the most critical decisions. Even a minor error in selection can trigger catastrophic leakage incidents, resulting in unplanned downtime and causing millions of dollars in production losses.
At GNEE, drawing upon our extensive experience accumulated over years in the export of stainless steel heat exchanger tubes, we have established four key criteria for tube selection: material grade, manufacturing process, dimensional precision, and inspection standards.
1. Step 1: Matching Material Grade to the Environment
The first step is identifying the corrosive nature and temperature of your fluid. Choosing 316L when 304L suffices wastes budget; choosing 304L when Duplex is required leads to premature failure.
| Material Grade | Common Standard | Max Temp (°C) | Best For... |
| AISI 304L | ASTM A213/A249 | 425°C | General food processing, clean water, low-pressure steam. |
| AISI 316L | ASTM A213/A249 | 450°C | Marine environments, chlorides, and mild acidic chemicals. |
| AISI 310S | ASTM A213/A312 | 1150°C | High-temperature oxidation resistance, furnaces, boilers. |
| Duplex 2205 | ASTM A789/A790 | 300°C | High-pressure, high-chloride, and stress corrosion environments. |
| Ferritic 446 | ASTM A268 | 1100°C | Sulfur-rich gases, high-temp recuperators (SCC immune). |
2. Step 2: A213 Seamless Vs. A249 Welded
Select Seamless (ASTM A213): If your operating pressure exceeds 100 Bar or you are dealing with critical superheated steam. Seamless tubes have 100% structural integrity with no weld weak points.
Select Welded (ASTM A249): For standard condensers and low-to-medium pressure exchangers. Welded tubes offer better wall thickness uniformity, which ensures more consistent heat transfer across the entire tube bundle.

3. Step 3: Optimizing Dimensions for Heat Transfer
Dimensions aren't just about fit; they dictate the Heat Transfer Coefficient.
| Parameter | Standard Range | Procurement Note |
| Outside Diameter (OD) | 6.35mm – 114.3mm | Smaller OD increases surface area but increases pressure drop. |
| Wall Thickness (WT) | 0.5mm – 12.7mm | Thinner walls improve heat transfer but reduce corrosion life. |
| Tube Length | 6m – 24m | Long tubes reduce the number of joints but require specialized shipping. |
| Form | Straight or U-Bent | U-bent tubes allow for thermal expansion without stress. |
4. Step 4: Quality Inspection
A professional supplier must provide data, not just promises. Ensure your PO (Purchase Order) requires the following:
Positive Material Identification (PMI): To confirm the alloy is exactly what you paid for (e.g., Mo > 2.0% for 316L).
Eddy Current Testing (ECT): Mandatory for detecting sub-surface defects in the tube wall.
Hydrostatic Testing: Usually 1.5x the design pressure to ensure zero-leakage performance.
Mill Test Certificate (MTC): Must be compliant with EN 10204 3.1 for full traceability.
5.Procurement Checklist
Before placing an order, please ask the supplier the following three questions:
"Does the tubing feature 'average wall thickness' or 'minimum wall thickness'?" (Minimum wall thickness provides a higher safety factor).
"Is the internal surface roughness (Ra) controlled?" (A smoother surface reduces scaling and fouling).
"What is the packaging method for long-distance transport?" (316/310S tubing must be packed in reinforced wooden crates).

Professional Packaging
ASTM A213 TP316L heat exchanger tubes feature thin walls (typically 1.5 mm to 2.5 mm); therefore, packaging must be designed to prevent bending, deformation, and surface scratches.
End Caps: Both ends of every tube must be fitted with protective caps to prevent dust ingress or moisture accumulation within the interior walls.
Export-Grade Fumigated Plywood Cases: The tubes are stacked in layers within the wooden crates, with each layer separated by wooden boards or soft cushioning materials.
Special Considerations:
Marking: The exterior of the crate must be clearly marked with the following information: Standard (ASTM A213 TP316L), Size (OD x WT x L), Heat No., Weight, as well as warning symbols such as "Do Not Stack" and "Keep Dry."
