is 904l stainless steel magnetic?

As a type of austenitic stainless steel, 904L stainless steel is non-magnetic in most cases, which is particularly important in some applications that are very sensitive to magnetism. 904L stainless steel cold-drawn tube belongs to austenitic stainless steel, and its crystal structure is face-centered cubic structure under normal conditions, which makes it non-magnetic or weakly magnetic.

However, in some special cases, 904L stainless steel may exhibit certain magnetism, such as:

Cold working deformation: During the cold working of 904L stainless steel exhaust pipe, such as cold drawing, cold rolling, etc., due to the change of crystal structure during the processing, part of the austenite structure will be transformed into martensite structure, and martensite structure is magnetic, which may cause 904L stainless steel to have certain magnetism after cold working.

Welding influence: During the welding process, the welding area will experience high temperature and rapid cooling, which may cause the transformation of the organization and produce a small amount of magnetic phase, so that the welding part may show certain magnetism.

Improper heat treatment: If the heating temperature, holding time or cooling rate of 904L stainless steel seamless pipe are not properly controlled during the heat treatment process, its internal structure may change, thus generating magnetism.

Methods for testing the magnetism of 904L stainless steel

Chemical composition analysis‌: By measuring the content of each element in the material through tools such as spectrometers, it is possible to accurately determine whether it is 904L stainless steel‌.
‌Material identification‌: Request relevant certification documents and quality assurance from suppliers to ensure that the purchased materials are 904L stainless steel‌.
