Super Duplex 2205 Pipe VS SS904L Pipe

When selecting high-performance stainless steel pipes for chemical, marine, and industrial applications, understanding the difference between Super Duplex 2205 (S32205 / EN 1.4462) and SS904L (N08904 / EN 1.4539) is essential. Both alloys offer excellent corrosion resistance, but their properties and ideal use environments differ.

What is Super Duplex 2205 Pipe?

Super Duplex 2205 Pipe is a high-performance duplex stainless steel pipe based on 2205 (UNS S31803/S32205). Its microstructure is uniformly composed of approximately 40%-50% austenite and 40%-50% ferrite. Its high chromium, molybdenum, and nitrogen content imparts it with an exceptional pitting resistance equivalent number (PREN ≥ 40), far exceeding that of common 300 series austenitic stainless steels (such as 304/316). It is widely used in fluid transportation and structural support under medium-to-high pressure and highly corrosive conditions.

What is SS 904L Pipe?
SS 904L Pipe is a low-carbon, high-alloy austenitic stainless steel pipe. Its key characteristic lies in the synergistic effect of high nickel (19.0-23.0%), high molybdenum (4.0-5.0%), and low sulfur (≤0.030%), resulting in excellent resistance to pitting, crevice corrosion, and stress corrosion cracking. Its Pitting Resistance Equivalent Number (PREN) is ≥35, significantly superior to 316L stainless steel (PREN ≈ 25). It is widely used in chemical equipment (such as reactors and storage tanks), environmental protection projects (such as flue gas desulfurization), marine facilities (such as seawater pipelines), and the pharmaceutical industry.
