SUS347 vs SUS316: Corrosion Resistance, Strength and Applications
Leave a message
When choosing stainless steel materials, it is crucial to understand the corrosion resistance, strength, and application areas of different steel grades. SUS347 and SUS316 are two common austenitic stainless steels, which have significant differences in chemical composition, corrosion resistance, high-temperature performance, and application scenarios.

What is SUS316 material?
SUS316 is a widely used austenitic stainless steel that conforms to Japanese Industrial Standards (JIS). Due to the addition of molybdenum, it possesses excellent corrosion resistance, making it ideal for harsh environments such as marine, chemical, food processing, and medical applications. Its resistance to chlorides and acids is superior to common stainless steel grades like 304. It is essentially identical to AISI 316 and exhibits excellent durability, weldability, and strength even under extreme conditions.
What is the equivalent of SUS347 stainless steel?
SUS 347 stainless steel equivalent is that of UNS CODE S34700, ASTM 347, KS STS 347, JIS SUS 347 and DIN 1.4550. The Modulus of Elasticity of AISI 347 stainless steel is 28.0 x 106 psi (193 GPa). The Melting Range of AISI 347 stainless steel is 1398–1446 °C (2550–2635 °F).

SUS316 and SUS347: Corrosion Resistance
SUS316 (JIS standard, equivalent to ASTM 316) has a pitting resistance equivalent number (PREN) of approximately 24–26, making it highly resistant to chloride-induced pitting and general corrosion in weak acid and seawater environments.
SUS347 stainless steel has a PREN of approximately 23–25, and its corrosion resistance in chloride-containing media is slightly lower than that of SUS316. However, SUS347 exhibits excellent intergranular corrosion resistance after exposure to temperatures of 427–816 °C because niobium prevents chromium carbide precipitation, thus maintaining a high local chromium content at the grain boundaries.
