UNS S31600 vs 304 Stainless Steel: Which Is Better for Industrial Use?

Choosing the right stainless steel grade is essential for long-term performance and cost-efficiency in industrial applications. Among the most widely used options are UNS S31600 (316 stainless steel) and 304 stainless steel. While they share similarities, key differences in corrosion resistance, composition, and application suitability make one more advantageous than the other depending on the use case.

This article breaks down the core differences, answers frequently asked buyer questions, and helps you decide which material is best for your project.

What is UNS S31600 stainless steel?

UNS S31600 is the unified numbering system designation for 316 stainless steel, known for its enhanced corrosion resistance due to molybdenum.

Is 316 (S31600) better than 304 in marine environments?

Yes. 316 offers superior resistance to saltwater and chlorides, making it the preferred choice in marine and offshore applications.

UNS S31600 vs 304 Stainless Steel: Key Differences

Metric UNS S31600 304 Stainless Steel
Chemical Composition 16-18% Cr, 10-14% Ni, 2-3% Mo (no carbon over 0.08%) 18-20% Cr, 8-10.5% Ni (no molybdenum; carbon ≤0.08%)
Tensile Strength 515-550 MPa 515 MPa
Elongation ≥40% ≥40%
Temperature Range -196°C to 800°C (stable at high temps) -196°C to 650°C (weaker at extreme heat)
Typical Lifespan (Harsh Environments) 15-20+ years 5-8 years (prone to pitting/crevice corrosion)

Corrosion Resistance

UNS S31600 contains 2-3% molybdenum, resulting in a stronger passive film and resistance to chloride pitting and crevice corrosion, making it suitable for marine, chemical processing, and coastal applications. 304, which does not contain molybdenum, is only resistant to mild environments and susceptible to corrosion in chlorine-rich environments (such as seafood processing plants).

Mechanical Properties: Industrial Strength

Both are easily welded and formed, but 316 is superior under high stress and high temperatures. At high temperatures, 316 maintains strength at 800°C (suitable for furnaces and heat exchangers), while 304 tends to deform above 650°C.
304 stainless steel has a tensile strength of 515 MPa, while 316 stainless steel has a tensile strength of 515-550 MPa, making it more suitable for heavy-duty equipment (pressure vessels and supports).

Is S31600 magnetic?

No. Like 304, S31600 is austenitic and non-magnetic in its annealed condition.

How much more expensive is 316 compared to 304?

Generally, 316 is 20–30% more expensive than 304 due to the addition of molybdenum and higher nickel content.

What standards cover S31600 tubes and pipes?

Common standards include ASTM A213 (seamless tubes), ASTM A312 (welded pipes), and ASTM A276 (bars and rods).
