UNS S32001 vs. 304 vs. 316L Stainless Steel: Key Differences

What is UNS S32001 duplex stainless steel?
UNS S32001 (also known as EN 1.4482 or SS LD24) is a low-alloy duplex stainless steel designed as a cost-effective, high-strength alternative to standard austenitic stainless steels such as 304 or 316L. Its yield strength is approximately twice that of conventional stainless steel, while also offering good corrosion resistance and excellent weldability. This grade complies with standards such as ASTM A240, ASME SA240, and EN 10088-2, ensuring its suitability for pressure vessel and structural applications.
Which is better, 304 or 316L stainless steel?
316L stainless steel is based on 304 stainless steel with the addition of 2%~3% molybdenum (Mo), and has a lower carbon content, giving it significantly better corrosion resistance than 304. 304 stainless steel is sufficient for use in ordinary atmospheric conditions, fresh water, and mildly corrosive environments, but it is prone to pitting corrosion or rusting in high-chloride environments. In contrast, 316L stainless steel is suitable for chloride-containing environments (such as seawater, de-icing salts, and coastal areas) as well as acidic or high-salinity media.

UNS S32001 vs. 304 vs. 316L Stainless Steel: Corrosion Resistance
UNS S32001 (a lean duplex stainless steel) offers the highest strength and superior general corrosion resistance, especially against stress corrosion cracking, compared to 304 and 316L. While 316L provides superior resistance to chlorides and pitting, S32001 performs better than 304. 304 is best for general, low-corrosion environments.

| SCC Resistance | Excellent | Poor | Moderate |
| Pitting Resistance | High | Moderate | High |
UNS S32001 vs. 304 vs. 316L Stainless Steel: Weldability
UNS S32001 (lean duplex) offers superior strength and good weldability, often acting as a cost-effective alternative to 304/316L, but it requires stricter heat input control (0.5–2.5 kJ/mm) to maintain its 50/50 austenite-ferrite balance. While 304 and 316L (austenitic) are easier to weld without special precautions, S32001 provides better stress corrosion cracking resistance.
Is S32001 stainless steel magnetic?
Yes. Unlike austenitic stainless steels 304 and 316L (which are non-magnetic), S32001 stainless steel has a duplex structure (approximately 50% ferrite and 50% austenite), and therefore is magnetic. This is an advantage in some industrial applications requiring magnetic separation or magnetic detection.
