What are the benefits of 904L steel?

In the modern industrial field, the corrosion resistance and reliability of materials directly determine the life of equipment and safe operation. As a representative of super austenitic stainless steel, 904L (UNS N08904) stainless steel pipe will be analyzed in depth from three dimensions: material properties, core advantages and application scenarios.
In sulfuric acid with a concentration below 50%, 904L stainless steel cold-drawn tubes can serve for a long time in a 100℃ environment, and their corrosion rate is only 1/10 of that of 316L stainless steel; in 85% formic acid, the corrosion rate is as low as 0.1mm/year. In an air environment at 900℃, the oxidation weight gain rate is only 0.5mg/cm²・h, and the Cr₂O₃ protective film formed effectively prevents further oxidation.
The service life of the 904L stainless steel welded pipe reactor is 15 years, far exceeding the 5-year cycle of 316L, and the comprehensive maintenance cost is reduced by 60%. By optimizing the wall thickness, the weight can be reduced by 30% compared to titanium alloy equipment while maintaining equivalent corrosion resistance.
Welding process optimization: ERNiCrMo-3 welding wire is selected, and the interlayer temperature is controlled below 100℃ to prevent thermal cracks
904L stainless steel pipe vs. 316L stainless steel case
In the phosphoric acid concentration device, the 904L stainless steel pipe has been running continuously for 8 years without leakage in an environment of 120℃ and 30% phosphoric acid (containing 200ppmF⁻), while the average life of the 316L steel pipe is only 18 months under this condition. The seawater cooling pipe of the offshore wind power platform uses 904L seamless pipe. In an environment with a salt content of 3.5% and a flow rate of 3m/s, the annual corrosion rate is only 0.02mm, which is much lower than the industry standard of 0.1mm/year.
