What is 316 grade stainless steel?

316L is a stainless steel grade that falls under the US ASTM standard system. Its corresponding grade in the Chinese GB standard system is 022Cr17Ni12Mo2, and its unified numerical code is S31603.

316L stainless steel is an austenitic stainless steel. Austenitic stainless steel has a face-centered cubic lattice structure and is non-magnetic. It cannot be strengthened by heat treatment, and its strength can only be increased by cold working. Austenitic stainless steel is corrosion-resistant, exhibits excellent ductility and toughness at both room and low temperatures, is easily formable, and exhibits excellent weldability, making it the most widely used in industry. Its production accounts for approximately 70% of all stainless steel production. Its products include plates, bars, pipes, strip, wire, and forgings.

316L stainless steel exhibits excellent resistance to sensitized intergranular corrosion, making it suitable for manufacturing thick welded components and equipment, such as those used in the petrochemical, fertilizer, papermaking, printing and dyeing, and nuclear industries.

Which grade of stainless steel is better, 304 or 316?
Due to the addition of molybdenum, grade 316 stainless steel is more corrosion resistant than similar alloys, such as 304 stainless steel. This reduces pitting from chemical environments and allows grade 316 stainless steel to be used in highly acidic and caustic environments that would otherwise eat away at the metal.

Is 304 or 316 stainless more expensive?
316 stainless steel is generally more expensive than 304 stainless steel. The increased cost is due to the addition of molybdenum and higher nickel content in 316, which enhances its corrosion resistance, particularly in harsh environments. While 304 is more cost-effective, 316 may be preferred for applications where corrosion resistance is critical.
