What is EN 1.4301 material?
EN 1.4301 material is an austenitic stainless steel, also known as AISI 304 or X5CrNi18-10. Its chemical composition is: 17.5-19.5% chromium, 8.0-10.5% nickel, and a maximum carbon content of 0.07%. It exhibits excellent corrosion resistance and good formability. Typical mechanical properties include: tensile strength of 500-700 MPa and a 0.2% yield strength of at least 190 MPa. Therefore, it is suitable for a wide range of applications, including household appliances, building components, and food processing equipment.

What material is 1.4301 equivalent to stainless steel?
Material 1.4301 is equivalent to AISI 304 stainless steel, and also known as X5CrNi18-10. It is the most common type of austenitic stainless steel, widely used for its excellent corrosion resistance, formability, and weldability. Other equivalent designations include UNS S30400 and BS 304S31.

Corrosion Resistance
304 stainless steel exhibits excellent corrosion resistance in a variety of environments and when in contact with different corrosive media. Pitting and crevice corrosion may occur in chloride-containing environments. Stress corrosion cracking may occur above 60°C.
Heat Resistance
304 stainless steel has good oxidation resistance under intermittent use, up to 870°C; it also has good oxidation resistance under continuous use, up to 925°C. However, continuous use at temperatures between 425-860°C is not recommended.
Heat Treatment
304 stainless steel cannot be hardened by heat treatment. Solution treatment or annealing can be achieved by heating to 1010-1120°C followed by rapid cooling.
Weldability
304 stainless steel has excellent weldability, regardless of whether welding wire is used. 308 stainless steel welding wire and electrodes are recommended for 304 stainless steel. For 304L stainless steel, 308L welding wire is recommended. Thick welds may require post-weld annealing. This step is not required for 304L stainless steel. If post-weld heat treatment is not possible, 321 stainless steel can be used.
What is the difference between 1.4301 and 304 stainless steel?
Carbon Content: 1.4301 typically has a slightly lower carbon content (≤ 0.07%) compared to SS 304 (≤ 0.08%). This might give 1.4301 slightly better corrosion resistance, particularly in welded sections.
What is the difference between 1.4301 and 1.4307 stainless steel?
The main difference is that 1.4307 (304L) is a low-carbon version of 1.4301 (304), which makes it better for welding applications because it has improved resistance to intergranular corrosion in the heat-affected zone. While 1.4301 has slightly higher mechanical strength, 1.4307 offers superior weldability and long-term corrosion resistance after welding.
