What is the difference between 1.4404 stainless steel and 1.4435 ?

Many people often cannot tell the difference between 1.4404 stainless steel and 1.4435 stainless steel? The definition of the two materials is very vague. Today, this blog post will analyze 1.4404 stainless steel and 1.4435 stainless steel from several aspects, including equivalent standards, chemical composition, mechanical properties and applications. I hope it will be helpful to everyone!

What is 1.4404 stainless steel?

1.4404 stainless steel is a high alloy austenitic stainless steel, also known as 316L stainless steel. It has good corrosion resistance and high temperature strength, and is widely used in chemical, food, pharmaceutical and other industries, such as reactors, pressure vessels, medical equipment, etc.

1.4404 stainless steel equivalent standard

‌1.4404 stainless steel equivalent standards include American standard ASTM 316L and Japanese standard SUS316L‌‌.

What is the equivalent standard of 1.4435 stainless steel?
According to EN this grade is written as specification 1.4435 or 316LMo or X. 1.4435 stainless steel is generally more corrosion resistant than 316L (1.4404) which has higher chromium, nickel and molybdenum content.
1.4435 There is no magnetism in the 1.4435 grade. This grade is used in corrosive environments. If the 316L grade is not enough, 1.4435 stainless steel may be a good alternative material. 1. The petrochemical industry, pharmaceutical industry, and chemical plants generally use 1.4435 stainless steel materials. This grade is not heat resistant and is not suitable for high temperature use. 1.4435 stainless steel is an austenitic high corrosion resistant material.

1.4404 vs 1.4435 stainless steel  Corrosion resistance
‌1.4404 stainless steel has good corrosion resistance, especially for various organic acids, inorganic acids, alkalis, and salts, and has good corrosion resistance to sensitized intergranular corrosion. It has good welding performance and is suitable for multi-layer welding. No heat treatment is required after welding, and there is no tendency of knife edge corrosion after welding.
‌1.4435 stainless steel has higher chromium, nickel, and molybdenum content, so it has better corrosion resistance than 1.4404, can maintain stable performance in harsh corrosive environments, and is suitable for more demanding environments.

1.4404 vs 1.4435 stainless steel  Application areas
‌1.4404 stainless steel is widely used in chemical industry, instrumentation engineering, sewage treatment plants, and papermaking industries.
‌1.4435 stainless steel is mainly used in petrochemical industry, pharmaceutical industry, chemical plants, and automotive industry. It is also suitable for industrial uses with higher requirements such as high-pressure vessels and pipelines.
