What is the difference between 410 and 416 stainless steel?

If you are looking for martensitic stainless steel bars or components with excellent strength, hardness, and wear resistance, you might be comparing 410 vs 416 stainless steel. Both belong to the martensitic stainless steel family, but their machinability, corrosion resistance, and mechanical properties differ significantly.

What is 410 stainless steel?

410 stainless steel is a general-purpose, hardenable martensitic stainless steel known for its good strength, hardness, and moderate corrosion resistance. It's used in applications that require high mechanical properties, such as turbine blades, valves, and automotive parts, and can be heat-treated to achieve different strength levels.

What is the equivalent of 410 stainless steel?
The equivalent grades for 410 stainless steel include 1.4006 (X12Cr13) in the EU and Germany, SUS410 in Japan, and 1Cr13 in China. In the US, the designation is simply 410 according to standards like ASTM A276, while in England, it is referred to as 410S21.

What is 416 stainless steel equivalent to?
416 stainless steel is a martensitic stainless steel grade and this grade can be heat threated. This grade is written as 1.4005 or X12CrS13 according to EN norm and it is written as UNS S41600 according to UNS norm. 1.4005 material is very similar to 410 grade stainless steels.

416 (Annealed) ≥ 510 ≥ 275 ≥ 12 ≤ 262 HB

Which is more corrosion resistant, 410 or 416?

410 stainless steel is more corrosion-resistant than 416 stainless steel. 410 stainless steel is a general-purpose heat-treatable alloy with good resistance to mild atmospheres, steam, and weak acids. 416 stainless steel, with added sulfur, is a "free-machining" steel. While this improves machinability, the sulfur can form tiny inclusions that can become pitting corrosion initiation points in humid or high-chloride environments.

Can 416 stainless steel be welded?
Welding is possible but not recommended due to sulfur content - which may cause hot cracking. Preheating and post-weld heat treatment are advised.

Is 416 stainless steel magnetic?

416 stainless steel is magnetic due to its martensitic microstructure. Due to its excellent machinability and high strength, it is often used to manufacture electrical components that require magnetic conduction or machining, such as solenoid valves and micro motors.

What is the price difference between 410 and 416 stainless steel round bars?
As of 2025, 410 stainless steel round bar price ranges from $2.4 – $2.8 per kg, while 416 stainless steel bar price is slightly higher, around $2.8 – $3.2 per kg, depending on diameter, surface, and order quantity.

FAQ

Is 416 stainless steel rust proof?

No, 416 stainless steel is not completely rust-proof. Like other stainless steels, it has some resistance to staining, but it will rust in certain environments. It is prone to rusting if exposed to salt water or high humidity. To achieve optimal corrosion resistance, 416 stainless steel must be heat-treated (hardened) and polished to a smooth surface.

Can 410 stainless steel be used in seawater?

No, 410 stainless steel is generally not recommended for use in seawater. Because it is a martensitic alloy designed for maximum strength and wear resistance rather than corrosion resistance, it is highly susceptible to rust, pitting, and crevice corrosion in salt water.

Why is 416 easier to machine?

Grade 416 is exceptionally easy to machine due to its high sulfur content (around 0.40% max), which acts as an internal lubricant. This sulfur creates soft "inclusions" in the metal that break up chips quickly, prevent tool binding, and drastically reduce tool wear.
