What is the difference between 416 and 420 stainless steel?

‌There are significant differences in composition, properties and applications between 416 stainless steel and 420 stainless steel.

Property 416 Stainless Steel 420 Stainless Steel
Chemical Composition
Carbon (C) ≤0.15% Higher carbon content
Chromium (Cr) 12.00%-14.00% Chromium present
Nickel (Ni) ≤0.60% (allowed) Usually none or trace
Molybdenum (Mo) ≤0.60% (optional) Usually none
Manganese (Mn) ≤1.25% -
Silicon (Si) ≤1.00% -
Phosphorus (P) ≤0.06% -
Sulfur (S) ≤0.15% (some grades ≥0.15%) -
Mechanical Properties
Tensile Strength ≥540 MPa Varies, often higher due to higher C content
Yield Strength ≥275 MPa -
Elongation ≥20% -
Hardness Moderate, can be heat-treated for higher hardness Generally higher hardness
Corrosion Resistance Good Good, with higher resistance to atmospheric conditions
Wear Resistance Moderate Higher due to higher carbon content

Performance difference
‌416 stainless steel‌: It has good cutting performance and is suitable for the production of solenoid valves, micro motors and electrical components. Its corrosion resistance is not as good as 304 and 316 stainless steel, but it performs well in dry conditions and mildly corrosive environments. 416 stainless steel can be strengthened through heat treatment to achieve higher strength and hardness levels‌.
‌420 stainless steel‌: It is a high-carbon grade martensitic stainless steel with high hardness and good wear resistance and corrosion resistance. In hardened conditions, it has good resistance to the atmosphere.

Differences in application areas
‌416 stainless steel‌: Mainly used in the production of solenoid valves, micro motors and electrical components. Its good cutting performance and moderate strength are suitable for these application scenarios‌.
‌420 stainless steel‌: widely used in precision machinery, bearings, electrical, equipment, instruments, meters, transportation, household appliances and other fields, especially suitable for occasions requiring high hardness, wear resistance and certain corrosion resistance‌.
