What is 254 smo material?
254 SMO is a high-end austenitic stainless steel containing high levels of chromium, molybdenum, and nitrogen. Its excellent resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion in high-chloride environments makes it an ideal alternative to nickel-based alloys and titanium in applications such as seawater treatment, chemical processing, and pulp and paper manufacturing. Its strength is almost twice that of standard 300 series stainless steels.
What is the equivalent material of 254 SMO Stainless Steel?
The material equivalents for 254 SMO Stainless Steel include UNS S31254, EN 1.4547, Werkstoff NR. 1.4547, and SIS 2378. It is also referred to as 6Mo alloy, and has specific equivalents for different product forms, such as ASTM A182 F44 for forgings and ASTM A351 CK3MCuN for castings.

254 SMO Stainless Steel vs. 316 Stainless Steel: Strength and Toughness
The yield strength of 254 SMO is significantly higher than that of 316 stainless steel, nearly twice as high. This means that 254 SMO is less prone to permanent deformation under stress. The ultimate tensile strength of 254 SMO is also slightly higher than that of 316.
254 SMO Stainless Steel vs. 316 Stainless Steel: Weldability
Both 254 SMO and 316 stainless steel can be welded using common welding techniques, but 254 SMO requires more care to avoid heat-affected zone (HAZ) cracking.
What is the difference between 254SMO and al6xn?
AL-6XN possesses approximately 5-10% greater strength than 254 SMO and is also ASME approved up to 800°F, whereas 254 SMO is approved up to 700°F. AL-6XN has been assigned to P Number 45 in Section IX of the ASME Boiler & Pressure Vessel code, Group 4 and uses 625 weld filler as well.
What is the difference between smo 254 and ss316?
SMO 254 is a high-alloy stainless steel with excellent corrosion resistance, strength and toughness due to its high molybdenum content. In contrast, SS316 is a more common austenitic stainless steel with good corrosion resistance in many general applications, but its performance and strength are far inferior to SMO 254 under harsh or high-chloride conditions.
