What is the difference between TP316 and 316?

There is no inherent difference between TP316 and 316 stainless steel, as "TP" stands for "Type" and simply designates the material as being of the 316 type within the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) standard, often used in pipe specifications. Both refer to the same austenitic stainless steel alloy containing chromium, nickel, and molybdenum, valued for its superior corrosion resistance compared to other grades like 304 stainless steel.

What is ASTM A312 TP316 material?
ASTM A312 TP316 refers to a type of seamless or welded pipe made from Type 316 austenitic stainless steel, a molybdenum-enhanced grade that provides superior corrosion resistance, especially in chloride-rich environments, making it suitable for harsh applications in industries like chemical processing and marine. The "TP" in the designation stands for "type," and the "316" identifies the specific composition of the stainless steel, which includes higher amounts of molybdenum than standard Type 304 steel.

What is the difference between TP316L and 316L?
The difference between TP316L and 316L is that "TP" indicates that the material meets ASTM standards and is designed for piping applications, while "316L" represents its chemical grade. Both are ultra-low carbon versions of 316 stainless steel.
Compared to standard 316, they offer superior resistance to intergranular corrosion in welded conditions. The "L" in 316L indicates its low carbon content, which prevents harmful carbide precipitation during welding, making it an ideal choice for welded components and harsh environments.

ASME SA312 Gr 316 seamless pipe is a pressure vessel-grade pipe produced through an extrusion process and available in sizes up to 24 inches. It is significantly more expensive than ASTM A312 TP316 welded stainless steel pipe. These pipes are available in sizes ranging from 1/8" to 36" in lengths exceeding 24 inches. A312 TP316 seamless pipe is produced by welding the metal longitudinally by passing a high-voltage current through it. This type of pipe requires no filler material for proper performance.
