What is the equivalent material of ASTM A312?

What ASTM A312 Covers

ASTM A312/A312M is the standard specification for seamless, straight-seam welded and heavily cold worked welded austenitic stainless steel pipe intended for high-temperature and general corrosive service. Pipe is ordered by nominal pipe size and schedule, with dimensions taken from ASME B36.10M or the size tables of the specification. It is the reference specification for stainless pipe in refinery, chemical, food, pharmaceutical and power plant piping systems.

Cross-Reference Table by Grade

A312 grade UNS EN JIS GB
TP304 S30400 1.4301, X5CrNi18-10 SUS304 06Cr19Ni10
TP304L S30403 1.4307, X2CrNi18-9 SUS304L 022Cr19Ni10
TP316 S31600 1.4401, X5CrNiMo17-12-2 SUS316 06Cr17Ni12Mo2
TP316L S31603 1.4404, X2CrNiMo17-12-2 SUS316L 022Cr17Ni12Mo2
TP321 S32100 1.4541, X6CrNiTi18-10 SUS321 06Cr18Ni11Ti
TP347 S34700 1.4550, X6CrNiNb18-10 SUS347 06Cr18Ni11Nb

The EN numbers and designations are those of EN 10088-1 and the delivery conditions of EN 10216-5 for seamless tube and EN 10217-7 for welded tube. JIS designations come from JIS G3459 for stainless steel pipes. GB designations use the Chinese unified digital naming system, in which the leading numbers give carbon content and the following symbols give chromium, nickel and other elements.

Composition and Mechanical Requirements

Grade Carbon max Cr Ni Mo Tensile min Yield min
TP304 0.08 % 18.0-20.0 8.0-11.0 - 515 MPa 205 MPa
TP304L 0.035 % 18.0-20.0 8.0-13.0 - 485 MPa 170 MPa
TP316 0.08 % 16.0-18.0 10.0-14.0 2.00-3.00 515 MPa 205 MPa
TP316L 0.035 % 16.0-18.0 10.0-16.0 2.00-3.00 485 MPa 170 MPa

Note the tighter carbon ceiling of 0.035 % that A312 applies to the L grades, and note also that these are pipe requirements: the same grade names carry different limits in plate and strip specifications. Mechanical values shown are minimums for the annealed condition at room temperature.

Where Equivalents Are Not Interchangeable

An equivalent designation is a starting point, not a substitute part. Four items must be checked before a cross-referenced pipe is accepted. First, mechanical properties: a European grade may satisfy the same application while meeting a different minimum yield level. Second, dimensional tolerances, since wall thickness tolerance bands differ between the ASME and EN systems. Third, heat treatment and delivery condition, including whether the pipe is solution annealed and pickled or supplied bright. Fourth, testing regime, covering the hydrostatic or eddy current test, the intergranular corrosion test required for some L grades, and the permissible repair welding conditions.

Specifying and Ordering in Practice

A sound purchase order quotes the ASTM specification with its edition, the grade, nominal pipe size and schedule, the manufacturing route (seamless or welded), the heat treatment condition and any supplementary testing. Certification should state grade, heat number, chemical analysis, tensile results and the applicable standard. Where both the ASTM and EN designations appear on a mill certificate, verify that the chemical analysis simultaneously satisfies both composition windows, since dual certification is valid only when every element falls within the overlap of the two ranges.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What is the EN equivalent of ASTM A312 TP304?
A: Grade 1.4301, designated X5CrNi18-10, delivered under EN 10216-5 for seamless tube or EN 10217-7 for welded tube.

Q: What is the equivalent of TP316L?
A: EN 1.4404, designated X2CrNiMo17-12-2; JIS SUS316L; and GB 022Cr17Ni12Mo2.

Q: Does ASTM A312 cover welded pipe?
A: Yes. It covers seamless pipe, straight-seam welded pipe and heavily cold worked welded pipe, with the manufacturing route stated on the order.

Q: Is ASTM A312 the same as ASTM A312M?
A: They are a single dual-unit specification. Values appear in both inch-pound and SI units, and the order must state which unit system governs.

Q: What is the carbon limit for TP316L in A312?
A: 0.035 % maximum, tighter than the 0.08 % limit applied to TP316 in the same specification.

Q: Can an EN 1.4301 pipe be used where A312 TP304 is specified?
A: Only after engineering review of mechanical properties, tolerances, heat treatment condition and test requirements, because equivalent grade designations do not by themselves guarantee interchangeability.
