What is the mechanical properties of X2CrNi18-9 ?

What material is X2CrNi18-9 ?

X2CrNi18-9 (material number 1.4307) is a low-carbon, austenitic stainless steel commonly known as AISI 304L. It is an 18/8 stainless steel (approx. 18% chromium, 8-10% nickel) designed for superior corrosion resistance and excellent weldability. It is non-magnetic, easy to polish, and used in chemical, food, and petrochemical industries.

What material is X2CrNi18-9 equivalent to?

X2CrNi18-9 (material number 1.4307) is primarily equivalent to AISI 304L. It is a low-carbon, austenitic chromium-nickel stainless steel often referred to as a "304L variant" or "V2A steel".

X2CrNi18-9 Stainless Steel: Corrosion Resistance

X2CrNi18-9 stainless steel exhibits exceptional corrosion resistance, primarily attributed to its high chromium and nickel content. The chromium element forms a dense oxide film (passive film) on the surface, which effectively resists the intrusion of corrosive media. It outperforms standard 304 stainless steel in environments containing chloride ions (such as seawater); however, it should be noted that stress-relief treatment is required in environments where the chloride ion concentration exceeds 200 ppm and the temperature exceeds 60°C.

X2CrNi18-9 Stainless Steel: Processing Characteristics

X2CrNi18-9 possesses excellent cold formability and a low work-hardening rate, making it suitable for processes such as deep drawing and spin forming-for instance, in the stamping and forming of kitchenware. For machining operations, the use of carbide cutting tools is recommended, employing low cutting speeds and high feed rates to minimize work hardening.

X2CrNi18-9 Stainless Steel: Welding Performance

X2CrNi18-9 demonstrates outstanding weldability and is compatible with various welding methods, including TIG, MIG, and laser welding; post-weld heat treatment is generally not required. For filler material, the use of ER308L welding wire (AWS standard) is recommended to ensure that the corrosion resistance of the weld seam matches that of the base metal. During welding, careful control of welding parameters is essential to prevent weld cracking and avoid degradation of mechanical properties within the heat-affected zone.

X2CrNi18-9 Stainless Steel: Heat Treatment

Solution treatment is the primary heat treatment method applied to X2CrNi18-9 stainless steel. The treatment temperature typically ranges from 1010°C to 1150°C, followed by rapid cooling (either water quenching or air cooling) to achieve a uniform austenitic microstructure. This treatment process enhances the material's strength and toughness while simultaneously improving its corrosion resistance. Following solution treatment, the material's hardness typically falls within the range of HBW ≤ 187 or HRB ≤ 90.

X2CrNi18-9 vs. X5CrNi18-10: Key Differences

Both X2CrNi18-9 (1.4307, 304L) and X5CrNi18-10 (1.4301, 304) are austenitic stainless steels that exhibit similar corrosion resistance; however, their key difference lies in their carbon content. X2CrNi18-9 features a lower carbon content (≤ 0.03%), resulting in superior resistance to intergranular corrosion following welding, whereas X5CrNi18-10 (≤ 0.07% C) offers slightly higher strength and is typically more readily available.
