What material is equivalent to Nitronic 60?

What is nitronic 60 material?

Nitronic 60 is a high-silicon, high-manganese, nitrogen-strengthened austenitic stainless steel alloy. A general-purpose metal, Nitronic 60 was originally designed as a temperature alloy, performing well at temperatures around 1800ºF, even under annealed conditions. Cold working Nitronic 60 can achieve higher strength, but does not enhance its wear resistance. Nitronic 60's oxidation resistance is similar to Alloy 309 and significantly better than Alloy 304.

What material is equivalent to Nitronic 60?

Nitronic 60 stainless steel is a high-silicon, high-manganese nitrogen-strengthened austenitic stainless steel. Its globally recognized equivalent grades include: 0Cr17Mn15Mo4N, UNS S21800, Alloy 218, and HPA 50. It is an excellent upgraded alternative to traditional 304 and 316 stainless steel, and can effectively prevent jamming and wear in unlubricated or high-temperature environments.

Nitronic 60 Corrosion Resistance:

Nitronic 60 (UNS S21800) generally provides corrosion resistance comparable to 304 stainless steel in most atmospheric and mildly corrosive environments. In chloride-containing conditions, its pitting resistance is typically superior to 304 due to nitrogen strengthening and higher silicon content, with a Pitting Resistance Equivalent Number (PREN) of approximately 24–26. This makes it suitable for moderate seawater splash zones, chemical equipment, and industrial applications where anti-galling performance is also required. However, in highly aggressive corrosive media or long-term seawater immersion, it cannot replace 316L stainless steel.

Nitronic 60 Wear Resistance:

In metal-to-metal sliding contact, Nitronic 60 provides approximately 5–10 times higher anti-galling resistance than 304 stainless steel. Under dry friction or boundary lubrication conditions, its wear resistance can be several times higher due to its high silicon (~3.5–4.5%) and nitrogen strengthening effect. This makes it an ideal material for components such as valve stems, bushings, fasteners, and pump parts where stainless steel surfaces are in direct contact under load.

Is Nitronic 60 better than 304 stainless steel?

Nitronic 60 is not a direct replacement for 304 stainless steel. Compared with 304, Nitronic 60 offers about twice the yield strength and significantly improved anti-galling and wear resistance. However, 304 stainless steel still performs better in general-purpose corrosion environments and is more cost-effective and widely used. Therefore, Nitronic 60 is "better" than 304 only in high-wear, anti-seizing, and metal-to-metal sliding applications, while 304 remains the preferred choice for general structural and corrosion-resistant uses.

is nitronic 60 stainless steel magnetic?

No, Nitronic 60 stainless steel is non-magnetic. It is a fully austenitic alloy with extremely low magnetic permeability (typically a maximum of 1.003). It is widely used in medical devices, electronic equipment, and sensor housings.

nitronic 60 Applications:

Nitronic 60 is widely used in harsh environments:
Automotive: Engine valves.
Marine: Pump shafts and ship axles.
Infrastructure: Pins and expansion joints in bridges.
Industrial: Fasteners, bushings, roller bearings, and valve assemblies.

Nitronic 60 stainless steel bar price

The price of Nitronic 60 stainless steel round bars typically ranges from $24 per foot for smaller diameter scrap to over $350 per foot for 2.5-inch diameter bars. Prices fluctuate significantly depending on diameter, length, and purchase volume, with industrial bulk prices generally between $8 and $30 per kilogram.
