304 304L 316 316L Decorative Stainless Steel Pipe

What is ASTM A544 stainless steel tubing?

ASTM A544 is a standard specification that covers welded stainless steel mechanical tubing. This standard applies to structural, ornamental, and decorative applications (such as handrails, furniture, and exhaust systems), rather than for high-pressure fluid transmission.
It is typically manufactured using 304/304L (general purpose) or 316/316L (suitable for coastal or corrosive environments) stainless steel. The tubing is formed from stainless steel strip and produced using an automatic welding process without the addition of filler metal. Prior to delivery, it is usually polished or buffed, offering a variety of surface finishes ranging from standard commercial grade up to a 600-grit mirror finish.

What are TP316/TP316L stainless steel decorative pipes?

TP316/TP316L stainless steel ornamental tubing refers to tubing manufactured from American Standard ASTM A544 TP316 (standard low-carbon) or TP316L (ultra-low-carbon) austenitic stainless steel. After surface treatment (such as polishing or brushing), it is used for visual display purposes including architectural curtain walls, handrails, and railings.

Unlike ordinary industrial fluid transmission pipes, ornamental tubing demands higher surface finish quality (such as mirror, matte, or brushed finishes) and dimensional accuracy. It typically features a thinner wall thickness, focusing on aesthetics rather than pressure containment.

What are TP304/TP304L stainless steel decorative pipes?

TP304/TP304L stainless steel ornamental tubing is an austenitic stainless steel that delivers high gloss and a premium texture after surface treatments such as polishing or brushing. It is easy to cut, bend, and weld, and can be fabricated into various cross-sectional shapes-including round, square, and rectangular tubes-to accommodate complex decorative designs. It is mainly used in applications like stair handrails, railings, and door or window frames, serving both structural support and aesthetic functions.

What is the primary difference between 304 and 316 ornamental tubing?
The most core difference lies in their chemical composition and corrosion resistance. 316 contains 2–3% molybdenum (Mo), which 304 lacks. Molybdenum significantly enhances resistance to chloride ion corrosion, such as seawater, salt spray, and de-icing salts. Visually, the two are indistinguishable to the naked eye and must be verified using a spectrometer (PMI) or chemical testing reagents.

304 vs. 316 Stainless Steel Ornamental Tubing: Coastal Environments

For decorative tubing applications in coastal areas, 316 stainless steel is the superior and recommended choice. Although 304 stainless steel is more cost-effective, it often develops noticeable reddish-brown "pitting rust spots" within 6 to 12 months, leading to high replacement costs; in contrast, 316 stainless steel contains molybdenum, providing the critical resistance needed to withstand salt spray and chloride corrosion.

What is the difference between ASTM A554 and ASTM A312?
  • ASTM A554 (Ornamental Tubing): Focuses on surface quality, roundness, straightness, and weld bead flatness. It does not require pressure testing (hydrostatic testing).
  • ASTM A312 (Industrial Pipe): Focuses on pressure-bearing capacity and the internal microstructure of the pipe wall. It generally does not prioritize surface brightness or appearance.
Will 316 ornamental tubing rust?
Under strong acids, strong alkalis, or prolonged lack of cleaning, 316 can still develop rust spots. However, in coastal or high-salt spray environments, the lifespan of 316 is far longer than that of 304.

304 304L 316 316L decorative stainless steel pipe price per kg

The price per kilogram for 304, 304L, 316, and 316L stainless steel pipes generally ranges from $2.00 to $10.00 per kg. Costs are heavily dictated by the specific manufacturing method (welded vs. seamless), the surface finish, and current global nickel and molybdenum commodity prices.
In addition to standard round and square tubes, GNEE Stainless Steel offers custom-molded shaped tubes (such as elliptical and slotted profiles) as well as PVD vacuum plating services (in finishes like black gold, rose gold, and sapphire blue).

Quality Control & Testing

  • PMI Verification: Equipped with professional handheld Positive Material Identification (PMI) spectrometers to conduct random checks on 100% of batches, ensuring 304 and 316 grades are never mixed.
  • 100% Manual Inspection: Each piece of tubing undergoes manual inspection under a dedicated viewing light rack to strictly control scratches, pinholes, dents, and color variations.
  • Ra Roughness Testing: For high-end orders, surface roughness testers are used to ensure the finish meets the customer's specified mirror or brushed grade.
  • Bending & Flaring Test: Conducted to guarantee that the tubing possesses excellent ductility and formability during fabrication.
  • Flattening Test: Conducted to verify the strength, integrity, and quality of the weld seam.

Packaging & Logistics

  • Single Pipe Wrapping: Each piece of tubing is individually sleeved in a PE protective bag (customizable thickness, e.g., 7C/10C) to prevent surface friction and scratching during transport.
  • Intermediate Bundling: Every 10 to 50 tubes are bundled together using heavy-duty woven bags to increase overall structural rigidity and prevent collisions.
  • Wooden Crates: Fumigated wooden crates are utilized for sea freight or long-distance land transport to protect the cargo from forklift damage.
