ASTM A249 / ASME SA249 is a standard specification for welded austenitic stainless steel tubing for high-temperature applications such as boilers, superheaters, condensers, and heat exchangers. This standard covers manufacturing requirements, material grades (e.g., TP304, TP304L, TP316L), quality control, and testing to ensure the suitability of the tubing for heat transfer and pressure-containing applications.
ASTM A249 / SA 249 Standard Specification for Welded Austenitic Steel Boiler, Superheater, Heat Exchanger, and Condenser Tubing
1.1 This specification covers welded tubing made of the various grades of austenitic steel listed in Table 1, with nominal wall thicknesses, suitable for use as boiler, superheater, heat exchanger, or condenser tubing.
1.2 Grades TP304H, TP309H, TP309HCb, TP310H, TO310HCb, TP316H, TP321H, TP347H, and TP348H are modifications of Grades TP304, TP309S, TP309Cb, TP310S, TP310Cb, TP316, TP321, TP347, and TP348 and are suitable for high-temperature applications such as superheaters and reheaters.
1.3 This specification generally provides for pipe sizes and thicknesses ranging from 1/8 in. [3.2 mm] inside diameter to 5 in. [127 mm] outside diameter, with wall thicknesses from 0.015 to 0.320 in. [0.4 to 8.1 mm] inclusive. Other sizes may be furnished, provided such pipe conforms to all other requirements of this specification.
1.4 Mechanical property requirements do not apply to tubing with an inside diameter less than 1/8 inch [3.2 mm] or a thickness less than 0.015 inch [0.4 mm].

Flattening Test
One flattening test shall be made on specimens from each end of one finished tube, not the one used for the flaring test, from each lot.
Flange Test
One flange test shall be made on specimens from each end of one finished tube, not the one used for the flattening test, from each lot.
Reverse-Bend Test
One reverse-bend test shall be made on a specimen from each 1500 ft [450 m] of finished tubing.
Hydrostatic or Nondestructive Electric Test
Each tube shall be subjected to either the hydrostatic or the nondestructive electric test. The purchaser may specify which test is to be used.
Markings
In addition to the marking prescribed in Specification A 1016/A 1016M, the marking for Grades TP304H, TP309H, TP309HCb, TP310H, TP310HCb, TP316H, TP321H, TP347H, and TP348H shall also include the heat number and the heat-treatment lot identification.
Note:
Mill test certificates will be issued according to EN10204.3.
All tubes shall be supplied as per applicable ASTM A249 /A249M Specification.
Packing and Marking
Packed in bundles or ply wooden box wrapped in plastic, and suitably protected for sea-worthily delivery or as requested.
