What is the difference between 440A, 440B and 440C series steels?
440 A - 440 B - 440C
The carbon content and hardness are progressively increased from A-B-C (A-0.75%, B-0.9%, C-1.2%). 440C is a very good high-end stainless steel, usually a hardness of 56-58 Rc. The rust resistance of these three kinds of steel is good, 440A is the best, and 440C is the lowest.

SOG SEAL 2000 uses 440A and Randall uses 440B to produce their stainless steel cutters. 440C is widely used and is probably the second most commonly used stainless steel (after ATS-34). If your knife is labeled "440," then it is likely to be cheaper than 440A; If manufacturers use a more expensive 440C, they will be happy to advertise this. The general feeling is that the 440A is just right for everyday use, especially the 440A with a good heat treatment (we heard that SOG's 440A heat treatment is very well received, I wonder who they hired to do this). The 440B is sturdier, while the 440C is superior.
