What types of stainless steel are magnetic?
For stainless steel, the issue of magnetism is a complex one.
Although stainless steel is generally considered non-magnetic, some types do exhibit magnetism. These types are often called "magnetic stainless steel".

The most common magnetic stainless steels are austenitic stainless steels, including types such as 302, 304, and 316. These steels contain nickel, which makes them nonmagnetic, but they also contain small amounts of iron, which makes them nonmagnetic. They are weakly magnetic. Ferritic and martensitic stainless steels, on the other hand, are inherently magnetic due to their high iron content.
Understanding the magnetism of different types of stainless steel is important for a range of applications, from designing magnets to identifying the types of materials used in products.
