This advanced chemistry enables it to withstand continuous operating temperatures up to 1050°C and intermittent peak temperatures approaching 1100°C. With a controlled carbon content of ≤0.08%, the TP309S stainless steel pipe minimizes carbide precipitation during welding and reduces the risk of intergranular corrosion, offering vastly superior weldability over the standard TP309 grade.
It is ideal for demanding applications including heat treatment furnaces, petrochemical plants, power generation stations, refinery heaters, waste incinerators, boilers, and high-temperature exhaust systems.

What is the difference between 309 and 309S stainless steel?
Type 309 stainless steel has a maximum carbon content of 0.20% and exhibits higher creep strength at extremely high temperatures. Type 309S is the low-carbon version, with a maximum carbon content of 0.08%; this lower carbon content minimizes carbide precipitation during welding, thereby reducing the risk of intergranular corrosion and making it more suitable for applications requiring welding.

What Is the Maximum Service Temperature of 309/309S Stainless Steel Pipe?
Continuous Service: TP309/309S stainless steel pipe offers excellent oxidation resistance in air and can withstand continuous service temperatures of up to 1038°C (1900°F).
Intermittent Service: For intermittent heating and cooling cycles, it is generally recommended for service temperatures up to 982°C (1800°F).
Why Choose 309 Instead of 310S?
TP309/309S contains slightly lower levels of chromium (Cr) and nickel (Ni) than TP310S, making it a more cost-effective solution for many high-temperature applications. If your operating temperature is below 1000°C (1832°F) and the service environment has moderate corrosion requirements, TP309/309S provides the best balance between performance and cost. For applications involving continuous temperatures above 1100°C (2012°F) or more aggressive oxidation conditions, TP310S is generally the preferred material due to its superior high-temperature strength and oxidation resistance.
How Weldable Is 309S Stainless Steel Pipe?
TP309S stainless steel pipe has excellent weldability and is compatible with most conventional fusion welding processes, including GTAW (TIG), GMAW (MIG), SMAW, and SAW. For optimal weld quality and corrosion resistance, ER309 or ER309L filler wire/electrodes are commonly recommended.
