TP304 vs TP304L: Which to Specify?

Both are 18/8 austenitic stainless steels. TP304L caps carbon at 0.035% (versus 0.08% for TP304), which limits chromium carbide precipitation during welding and in service up to about 425°C. For boiler and heat exchanger tubes where welded joints are exposed to water or steam, TP304L is the safer, standard choice. Choose TP304 only when the application is fully welded-and-annealed and carbon content is not a concern.

What are the common surface finishes for A249 304L tubing?

AP (Annealed & Pickled): Solution annealed followed by pickling; the surface has a silvery-white matte finish.
BA (Bright Annealed): Bright annealed; the surface has a mirror-like finish, and the inner wall is extremely smooth, making it resistant to scaling (under-deposit corrosion is a primary cause of heat exchanger failure).
