1.4401 vs 1.4501 Stainless Steel: Corrosion Resistance

If you are selecting stainless steel for applications exposed to aggressive environments such as seawater, chemical processing, or offshore engineering, you may compare 1.4401 (AISI 316) and 1.4501 (Super Duplex 2507) stainless steels. Both are known for excellent corrosion resistance, but their composition and performance differ significantly.
This guide explains the key differences between 1.4401 and 1.4501, focusing on corrosion resistance, mechanical strength, and typical applications - helping you choose the best material for your project.

1.4401 vs 1.4501 Stainless Steel: Corrosion Resistance

What is the equivalent of 1.4401 stainless steel?
The EN 1.4401 stainless steel is equivalent to the American standard AISI 316 and the UNS designation UNS S31600. It is an austenitic stainless steel that is known for its enhanced corrosion resistance due to added molybdenum, making it suitable for marine and food industry applications.

What is the equivalent of 1.4501 stainless steel?
The equivalent of stainless steel 1.4501 is UNS S32760 and ASTM F55, and it is also known by the trade name Zeron 100. It is a super duplex stainless steel alloy that is highly corrosion-resistant and mechanically strong.

1.4401 vs 1.4501 Stainless Steel: Chemical Composition

Element EN 1.4401 (AISI 316) EN 1.4501 (Super Duplex 2507)
Chromium (Cr) 16.5–18.5% 24–26%
Nickel (Ni) 10–13% 6–8%
Molybdenum (Mo) 2.0–2.5% 3–4%
Nitrogen (N) - 0.24–0.32%
Carbon (C) ≤ 0.07% ≤ 0.03%
Manganese (Mn) ≤ 2.0% ≤ 1.2%
Silicon (Si) ≤ 1.0% ≤ 0.8%

1.4401 vs 1.4501 Stainless Steel: Mechanical Properties

Property 1.4401 (AISI 316) 1.4501 (Super Duplex 2507)
Tensile Strength (MPa) 520–720 800–1000
Yield Strength (MPa) ≥ 220 ≥ 550
Elongation (%) ≥ 40 ≥ 25
Hardness (HB) ≤ 215 ≤ 310

Corrosion Resistance: 1.4401 vs. 1.4501

1.4401 (316) Stainless Steel: Due to the addition of molybdenum, it exhibits excellent resistance to general corrosion and pitting corrosion caused by chlorides. Commonly used in marine and chemical environments, but not suitable for extremely high chloride concentrations.

1.4501 (Super Duplex Steel 2507): Has an excellent pitting resistance equivalent value (PREN > 40), almost twice that of 316. It is more resistant than austenitic steel to chloride stress corrosion cracking, acidic gases, and high-temperature seawater.

If your application involves the construction of seawater, offshore oil and gas, or chemical storage tanks, then 1.4501 offers superior long-term performance compared to 1.4401.

Is 1.4501 more expensive than 1.4401?
1.4501 costs about 20–40% more than 1.4401 due to its alloying elements (Cr, Mo, N) and duplex structure. However, its longer lifespan often results in lower lifecycle cost.

Can 1.4401 replace 1.4501 in marine environments?
Only for low chloride exposure. In high-salinity or stagnant seawater, 1.4501 is much more reliable.

Is 1.4501 magnetic?
Yes. Being a duplex steel, it exhibits partial magnetic properties, unlike non-magnetic austenitic 1.4401.
