What is 1.4404 stainless steel?
1.4404 stainless steel is an austenitic stainless steel, also known as AISI 316L, prized for its excellent corrosion resistance and mechanical properties. It is a low-carbon version of grade 316, making it resistant to intergranular corrosion and suitable for welding, especially in environments exposed to chlorides and acids, such as the pharmaceutical, food, and chemical industries.
What is the equivalent of 1.4404 stainless steel?
The European standard grade 1.4404 stainless steel is equivalent to the American standard 316L stainless steel. It is also known as UNS S31603.

What is 1.4404 casting equivalent to?
The casting equivalent to 1.4404 is ASTM SA-351 CF3M, as it is the cast version of the wrought stainless steel 316L (which 1.4404 is the European designation for). Both materials are austenitic stainless steels with low carbon content, making them resistant to welding-related corrosion.
What is 1.4404 Chemical Composition?
The chemical composition of 1.4404 stainless steel, also known as 316L, is approximately 16.5–18.5% Chromium (Cr), 10.0–13.0% Nickel (Ni), and 2.0–2.5% Molybdenum (Mo).

What is the density of 1.4404 SS ?
The density of 1.4404 stainless steel is approximately 8.0 g/cm³ or 8.0 kg/dm³. Different sources may give slightly different values, such as 7.95 g/cm³ or 7.97 g/cm³, but 8.0 is the most commonly cited value.
Is 1.4404 SS stainless steel magnetic?
No, 1.4404 stainless steel is generally not magnetic, as it is an austenitic stainless steel, which is non-magnetic in its annealed state. However, it can become slightly magnetic after undergoing cold working, such as bending or welding, because this process can partially change its crystal structure.
Welding
AISI 316L stainless steel (1.4404 / X2CrNiMo17-12-2) exhibits excellent weldability. This material can be welded using all common welding methods (except gas welding). Generally, no welding wire or subsequent heat treatment is required. Welding does not affect its intergranular corrosion resistance.
Forging
During forging, AISI 316L / 316S11 stainless steel must first be slowly heated to 1150°C to 1180°C. The forging temperature range is 900°C to 1180°C.
Heat Treatment and Hot Forming
Solution heat treatment (air or water cooling): 1020-1120 °C
Hot forming (air cooling): 1200-900 °C
