What Is The Equivalent Of 1.4401 1.4404 ?
1.4401 is equivalent to AISI 316 or UNS S31600, while 1.4404 is equivalent to AISI 316L or UNS S31603. The main difference is that 1.4404 (316L) is a low-carbon version of 1.4401 (316), making it more suitable for welded applications because it is less susceptible to intergranular corrosion.
1.4404 is a low carbon, austenitic chromium-nickel-molybdenum steel. When 1.4404 material is welded, it is resistant to intergranular corrosion. For this reason, it is preferred to use instead of 1.4401 in cases where welding will be made. It is not resistant to corrosion in sea water.
What is the components of 1.4404 stainless steel?
1.4404 stainless steel is an austenitic stainless steel, mainly composed of iron, with chromium (16.50-18.50%), molybdenum (2.00-2.50%), and nickel (10.00-13.00%) as its main alloying elements. It also contains other elements such as carbon (up to 0.03%), manganese (up to 2.00%), silicon (up to 1.00%), phosphorus (up to 0.045%), and sulfur (up to 0.03%).

What Is the Yield Strength of Stainless Steel 1.4404?
The typical yield strength (Rp0.2) of 1.4404 stainless steel is: 170 – 230 MPa (Annealed Condition).
This value may vary depending on product form:
| Product Type | Yield Strength (Approx.) |
|---|---|
| Cold-rolled sheet/coil | 200–230 MPa |
| Hot-rolled plate | 170–210 MPa |
| Cold-drawn tube/bar | 250–350 MPa |
| Welded tube | 190–220 MPa |

What is the tensile strength of 1.4404 material?
The tensile strength of 1.4404 stainless steel typically ranges from 500 to 700 MPa (megapascals), though some sources indicate a wider range depending on the product form, such as cold-finished bars or wires. For example, cold-finished sheets and strips may have a tensile strength of 530 to 680 MPa, while some drawn wires have a higher range.
| Property | Typical Value |
|---|---|
| Yield Strength (Rp0.2) | 170–230 MPa |
| Tensile Strength (Rm) | 480–620 MPa |
| Elongation | ≥ 40% |

Forging
When forging, the stainless steel AISI 316L / 316S11 must first be heated slowly to a temperature of 1150°C to 1180°C. Forging can take place in the temperature range of 900°C to 1180°C. In order not to negatively influence the corrosion resistance, the forging material should be cooled quickly in air or in water. Corrosion resistance is also affected by scale and tarnish, which must be removed. Freehand forging and joint forging are possible.
Machinability
AISI 316L stainless steel has medium machinability. In direct comparison, the machinability of this stainless steel grade is better than that of AISI 316/1.4401 due to its lower carbon content.
