1.4462 vs 316L stainless steel: key differences

In the world of stainless steel, selecting the right grade is critical to ensuring long-term performance and cost-effectiveness. Two commonly compared materials are EN 1.4462 (Duplex 2205) and 316L (AISI 316L / EN 1.4404). While both offer corrosion resistance and versatility, they differ significantly in mechanical strength, microstructure, and ideal use cases.

This article breaks down the key differences between 1.4462 and 316L stainless steel, helping you make an informed material selection for your project.

1.4462 Stainless Steel (Duplex 2205)

EN 1.4462, also known as X2CrNiMoN22-5-3 or UNS S32205/S31803, is a duplex stainless steel with a two-phase microstructure that combines the strength of ferritic steel and the corrosion resistance of austenitic steel.
key performance
1.Twice the yield strength of 316L
2.Excellent resistance to stress corrosion cracking
3.Superior pitting and crevice corrosion resistance in chloride-rich environments
4.Ideal for structural and high-load applications in marine, offshore, chemical, and wastewater industries

316L Stainless Steel (EN 1.4404)

316L is a low carbon austenitic stainless steel with good formability and weldability; excellent corrosion resistance in mild to moderately corrosive environments; stability in high temperature and sanitary applications. It is widely used in pharmaceuticals, food processing, marine fittings and chemical storage tanks.
However, compared with duplex stainless steel, it has poor resistance to localized corrosion (e.g. pitting, crevice corrosion) under high chloride conditions.

Magnetic Properties Slightly magnetic Non-magnetic

Difference between 316L and 1.4462

Duplex 2205 vs 316L corrosion resistance

1.4462 contains more chromium, molybdenum, and nitrogen, resulting in a higher PREN (Pitting Resistance Equivalent Number) and better overall resistance to localized corrosion-particularly in seawater, brine, and acidic chemicals.

316L performs well in most freshwater, mild acid, and indoor applications but can suffer from pitting corrosion in saltwater or aggressive media without proper surface treatment.

316L vs 1.4462 strength

1.4462 has a yield strength approximately 2 times higher, making it ideal for load-bearing, high-pressure systems or applications where reduced wall thickness is required to reduce weight.
316L is easier to form and is the preferred choice for deep drawing, bending or applications requiring high elongation.

316L vs 1.4462:Cost

In terms of initial cost, 316L austenitic stainless steel is generally cheaper than EN 1.4462 duplex stainless steel, however, from a total life cycle cost (LCC) perspective, 1.4462 is more cost-effective in the long term. Its excellent corrosion resistance reduces maintenance, downtime and replacement frequency.
