What is 1.4509 stainless steel?
1.4509 stainless steel is a ferritic stainless steel equivalent to the AISI 439 and UNS S43940 designations. It primarily contains 17%-19% chromium and a low carbon content. Its corrosion resistance is similar to that of 304/304L, and it can withstand a variety of oxidizing environments. It has a high yield strength, approximately 1.5 times that of carbon steel, high thermal conductivity, low thermal expansion coefficient, and good weldability. Post-weld annealing is generally not required, making it suitable for applications such as automotive exhaust systems, household appliance components, heat exchangers, and sugar industry equipment.

Hardness of 439 Stainless Steel
The hardness of 439 stainless steel is primarily influenced by cold working and heat treatment processes. In the annealed state, the hardness typically ranges from HV140-180 (approximately Brinell hardness HB 80-100), which is in the medium-low hardness range. This gives it good plasticity and moderate strength, making it suitable for cold forming processes such as bending and stamping. After cold rolling or cold drawing, the hardness can increase significantly, reaching up to HV250 or higher.
Weldability of 439 Stainless Steel
439 stainless steel, due to its inclusion of the stabilizing element titanium (Ti), effectively inhibits the formation of chromium carbides (Cr23C6) during the welding process, thus significantly improving its intergranular corrosion resistance. Its weldability is superior to that of ordinary 430 stainless steel, which does not contain titanium stabilization. When suitable welding processes such as TIG welding, MIG welding, or resistance welding are employed, 439 stainless steel forms uniform welds with a low tendency for embrittlement in the heat-affected zone (HAZ).
Overall, 439 stainless steel is ideal for structural welded components, automotive exhaust systems, appliance sheet metal connections, and other applications that require both corrosion resistance and weldability. It is an upgraded replacement material for 430 stainless steel in welding applications.
