1.4542 stainless steel: Mechanical properties , Applications

What is 1.4542 stainless steel?

EN 1.4542 (X5CrNiCuNb16-4) is the European standard grade for 17-4PH stainless steel (UNS S17400). It belongs to the martensitic precipitation-hardening stainless steel series, strengthened by the precipitation of copper during the aging process. Unlike traditional austenitic stainless steels, 1.4542 achieves its excellent properties through controlled heat treatment, allowing for adjustable strength and hardness as needed without sacrificing corrosion resistance. It can be processed into various practical product forms, including plates, coils, tubes, bars, and wires.

What is 1.4542 stainless steel equivalent to?

1.4542 stainless steel (also known as X5CrNiCuNb16-4) is a precipitation-hardening stainless steel, equivalent to 17-4 PH, AISI 630, and UNS S17400 grades. It possesses high strength, high hardness, and good corrosion resistance, and is commonly used in industries such as aerospace, medical, and petrochemicals.

Applications Of 1.4542 Stainless Steel

Is 1.4542 stainless steel stronger than 316?

Yes, 1.4542 (17‑4PH) is significantly stronger than 316 in the peak-aged condition: 1.4542 can achieve tensile strength ≥ 1310 MPa and yield strength ≥ 1170 MPa (H900 temper), whereas 316/316L typically has tensile strength 515–620 MPa and yield strength ≥ 205 MPa, due to its precipitation-hardening martensitic structure.

Can 1.4542 stainless steel be welded?

Yes, 1.4542 can be welded using TIG, MIG, and resistance methods, but precipitation heat treatment should be done after welding to restore strength; if welded in the aged condition, avoid overheating to prevent loss of mechanical properties.

What heat treatment is best for 1.4542 stainless steel?

The optimal heat treatment is solution annealing at 1040–1065 °C followed by rapid cooling (water quench) and aging at 480–620 °C (commonly 482 °C for H900 temper) to develop the highest strength and hardness (up to 38 HRC).

Is 1.4542 stainless steel corrosion resistant?

1.4542 offers good general corrosion resistance in mildly acidic and chloride-containing environments, but its PREN ≈ 20–22 is lower than 316 (PREN ≈ 24–26), making it less resistant to pitting and crevice corrosion in aggressive chloride media; it is not recommended for prolonged exposure to seawater or strong acids.
