What is 17-4 PH Material?
17-4 PH (precipitation-hardening) is a versatile martensitic stainless steel that offers high strength, good corrosion resistance, and excellent mechanical properties up to 600°F (316°C). Containing approximately 17% chromium and 4% nickel, and capable of achieving different strength levels through heat treatment, it is widely used in demanding applications such as aerospace, oil and gas, medical devices, and food processing.
17-4 PH material equivalent
The main equivalent grade of 17-4 PH stainless steel is AISI 630 (or UNS S17400), which is a precipitation-hardening stainless steel with corrosion resistance comparable to Type 304 stainless steel in many media, but with higher strength after heat treatment, and various properties can be achieved through aging treatment. Other equivalent grades include SUS630, ASTM A564 (630), and certain aerospace specifications such as AMS 5643.

17-4 PH material corrosion resistance
17-4 PH (EN 1.4542, UNS S17400) is a precipitation‑hardenable martensitic stainless steel with ~16–18 % Cr, 3–5 % Ni, and < 0.1 % Mo, giving it a PREN ≈ 20–22, which provides good resistance to general corrosion and oxidation, but is less resistant to pitting and crevice corrosion in chloride environments compared to 316 stainless steel (PREN ≈ 24–26), making it suitable for mildly aggressive conditions.
17-4 PH material strength
In the peak‑aged H900 temper, 17-4 PH achieves tensile strength ≥ 1310 MPa, yield strength ≥ 1170 MPa, and hardness up to 38 HRC, which is more than double the strength of annealed 316 stainless steel (tensile ~515 MPa, yield ≥ 205 MPa), while maintaining reasonable toughness.
17-4 PH material heat treatment
The optimal heat treatment consists of solution annealing at 1040–1065 °C followed by rapid water quenching, then aging at 480–620 °C (typically 482 °C for H900 temper) to develop maximum strength and hardness, with the exact aging temperature determining the final mechanical properties.
Is 17-4pH stainless the same as 304?
No, 17-4 PH and 304 stainless steel are not the same; 17-4 PH is a high-strength, precipitation-hardenable martensitic stainless steel, while 304 is a more common austenitic stainless steel known for excellent corrosion resistance and formability, with 304 being softer and easier to machine but 17-4 PH offering significantly higher strength, especially after heat treatment, for demanding, high-load parts.
What is the difference between 17-4 PH and 316 SS?
17-4 PH is a high-strength precipitation-hardening stainless steel with good but not exceptional corrosion resistance, making it ideal for high-stress components such as aerospace parts. 316, on the other hand, is a lower-strength austenitic stainless steel known for its excellent corrosion resistance, particularly in chloride environments, making it a common choice for applications where strength is not the primary consideration, such as marine equipment, food processing, and chemical equipment.
Our 17-4PH stainless steel is available in a variety of shapes and sizes, including plates, bars, tubes, wires, and flanges. Common processing methods include forging, rolling, machining, and welding. Due to its excellent mechanical properties and heat treatment flexibility, 17-4PH stainless steel generally yields excellent processing results.
Our 17-4PH stainless steel complies with various international standards and certifications, including ASTM A564 and AMS 5604. Its high strength and hardness allow it to withstand high loads and high-pressure environments, while its good ductility and toughness ensure safety during processing and use. Our 17-4PH steel is not limited to the forms listed above, and custom orders are welcome. Please feel free to inquire!
