17-4 PH annealed stainless steel sheet

17-4 PH stainless steel plate is a martensitic precipitation-hardening stainless steel, also known as SUS630 or UNS S17400. Annealed 17-4 PH stainless steel plate refers to a 17-4 PH stainless steel plate that has undergone solution annealing heat treatment, serving as a pre-treated blank before final age hardening. It is also referred to as 17-4PH Condition A.

Solution annealing is typically conducted at 1020–1060°C followed by rapid cooling, which controls the hardness below 38 HRC (≤363 HB). This provides excellent machinability, making it easy to cut and form. Its corrosion resistance is close to that of 304 stainless steel, allowing it to adapt to conventional processing and storage environments.

After subsequent low-temperature age hardening treatment (with aging temperatures adjustable between 480°C and 620°C), its tensile strength can reach 930–1310 MPa to meet diverse application requirements, while maintaining minimal deformation post-heat treatment.

Due to its ease of secondary processing, annealed 17-4 PH steel plates are mainly used for custom machining of various structural components, such as aerospace engine brackets, chemical valve cores, medical surgical instruments, petroleum industry valve stems, and other parts requiring high strength and corrosion resistance.

Standards for 17-4 PH Annealed Sheet

ASTM A693: Standard specification for rain-hardening stainless steel heat-resistant sheets, plates, and strips (most commonly used).
AMS 5604: Aerospace materials standard (for sheet metal).

How to increase the strength of 17-4 PH annealed plates to the maximum level?

Through a single-step aging treatment.
The most commonly used conditions include:

H900: Heat at 900°F (482°C) for 1 hour; hardness reaches 40-47 HRC (maximum strength).

H1050: Heat at 1050°F (565°C) for 4 hours; hardness is approximately 35-41 HRC (better toughness).

Will the dimensions of 17-4 PH change after heat treatment?

Yes, but minimally. 17-4 PH undergoes a slight shrinkage when transforming from Condition A to an aged state (such as H900). The dimensional change is approximately 0.0004 to 0.0006 inches per inch (or 0.04% - 0.06%).

How is the corrosion resistance of 17-4 PH in the annealed state?

In Condition A, its corrosion resistance is generally inferior to that of the fully aged states. Its corrosion resistance is comparable to 304 stainless steel. It outperforms all 400-series martensitic stainless steels (such as 410 and 420) but is lower than 316 stainless steel.

FAQ

What is the difference between 17-4 PH and 17-7 PH stainless steel?

17-4 PH stainless steel possesses extremely high hardness, rigidity, and good weldability. It is primarily used in structural components, aerospace parts, drive shafts, fasteners, and medical devices.

17-7 PH stainless steel exhibits even greater ductility in the annealed state, making it easy to bend into complex shapes. It is the preferred material for springs, bellows, diaphragms, and components subjected to repeated bending and stress.

Can 17-4 PH sheet in the annealed state be bent or cold-formed?

Recommendation: The bending radius should be as large as possible. If deep drawing or vigorous forming is required, 17-7 PH is generally recommended because it is softer (austenitic structure) in the annealed state and easier to form.
