What Is 17-4PH Stainless Steel?
17-4PH is a martensitic precipitation-hardening stainless steel. The designation summarizes its chemistry: 17% chromium, 4% nickel, plus 4% copper and a niobium addition. It is specified as UNS S17400 in ASTM A564 (bar) and A693 (plate/sheet), AISI type 630, JIS SUS630, and GB 0Cr17Ni4Cu4Nb. The grade is supplied in the solution-annealed condition and reaches its final mechanical properties through a low-temperature aging treatment that precipitates copper-rich particles in the martensitic matrix.
Heat Treatment Schedule
| Step | Condition |
|---|---|
| Solution annealing | 1020 – 1060°C, rapid cooling (oil or air) |
| Aging H900 | 480°C (470–490°C), air cool |
| Aging H1025 | 550°C (540–560°C), air cool |
| Aging H1075 | 580°C (570–590°C), air cool |
| Aging H1150 | 620°C (610–630°C), air cool |
The aging temperature trades strength against toughness: H900 gives the highest hardness (up to about 40–44 HRC with tensile strength above 1300 MPa) but the lowest toughness; H1150 gives lower strength (about 930–1000 MPa) with markedly better ductility and stress-corrosion resistance. For thick-wall pipe and pressure-retaining parts, the higher aging temperatures are usually specified.
Typical Mechanical Properties After Aging
| Condition | Tensile Strength (MPa) | Yield Strength (MPa) | Elongation (%) | Hardness |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| H900 (480°C) | ≥ 1310 | ≥ 1170 | ≥ 10 | ≥ 40 HRC |
| H1025 (550°C) | ≥ 1070 | ≥ 1000 | ≥ 12 | ≈ 33–38 HRC |
| H1075 (580°C) | ≥ 1000 | ≥ 860 | ≥ 13 | ≈ 31–36 HRC |
| H1150 (620°C) | ≥ 930 | ≥ 725 | ≥ 16 | ≈ 28–33 HRC |
Weldability and Fabrication
17-4PH welds satisfactorily with matching or 17-4PH-compatible filler; a common practice is to weld in the annealed condition and restore properties with a full solution and aging cycle. The low-carbon martensitic matrix reduces the risk of cold cracking compared with conventional martensitic grades, and the niobium addition refines grain size in the heat-affected zone. For thick-wall pipe, preheat is generally unnecessary, but interpass temperature should be limited and post-weld aging is essential to recover strength. Corrosion resistance in the aged condition is between that of 304 and 430, adequate for water, mild chemical and atmospheric service, but not for hot chlorides or strong acids.
Applications
Valve stems, seats and bodies in oil, gas and chemical plants
Pump shafts, impellers and mechanical seal components
Turbine first-stage impellers and high-speed rotating parts
Chemical fiber production equipment and high-strength machine parts
Fasteners, couplings and components requiring high strength with moderate corrosion resistance
Selection Notes for Thick Wall Pipe
Confirm the supply condition (solution annealed, Condition A) and the required final aging condition (H900 through H1150) in the purchase order.
Specify the product standard, for example ASTM A564 for bar, A693 for plate, or applicable tube specifications, and require EN 10204 3.1 mill certification for traceability.
Remember that 17-4PH is magnetic (martensitic), unlike austenitic grades, which matters in electromagnetic and inspection applications.
Frequently Asked Questions
What does 17-4PH stand for?
17% chromium, 4% nickel, and PH for precipitation hardening; the copper addition provides the hardening response.
What is the difference between H900 and H1150?
H900 (aging at 480°C) maximizes strength and hardness; H1150 (620°C) trades some strength for higher toughness and better resistance to stress corrosion cracking.
Is 17-4PH stainless steel magnetic?
Yes. It is martensitic and therefore magnetic in all conditions.
Can 17-4PH be welded?
Yes, with matching filler and controlled heat input; strength is restored by solution annealing and aging after welding.
Is 17-4PH resistant to seawater?
Only in the overaged condition (H1150 and above) and with cathodic protection considerations; for permanent seawater service, duplex or super-austenitic grades are usually preferred.
What is SUS630?
SUS630 is the JIS designation of 17-4PH (0Cr17Ni4Cu4Nb in the Chinese system), widely used in valve and pump manufacturing in Asia.
