AISI 310 vs 310S stainless steel: heat resistance

What is AISI 310 stainless steel?

Stainless steel is a high-carbon, high-chromium-nickel austenitic stainless steel. It possesses excellent mechanical properties, high-temperature oxidation resistance, and heat resistance. Type 310S is a low-carbon version of SS 310, while 310H is designed for optimal creep strength and creep rupture strength. Niobium is added to 310Cb to maximize carbide stability, prevent sensitization, and improve weldability and high-temperature creep strength.

What is the difference between 310 and 310S stainless steel?

The main difference lies in the carbon content; the maximum carbon content of 310S (0.08%) is lower than that of 310 (0.25%). This makes 310S more suitable for welding applications because the lower carbon content reduces the risk of carbide precipitation and improves its resistance to intergranular corrosion.

AISI 310 vs 310S stainless steel:Physical properties

310 and 310S stainless steels possess similar physical and thermal properties. Both have a density of 0.289 psi, ensuring structural stability in high-temperature applications. The thermal conductivity of these alloys increases with temperature, reaching 31.7 W/m·K at 1500 K. Specific heat capacity also increases with temperature.

AISI 310 vs 310S stainless steel: heat resistance

The main difference between AISI 310 and 310S lies in their carbon content, which directly affects their high-temperature resistance and corrosion resistance. Due to its lower carbon content, 310S stainless steel is less prone to carbide precipitation at high temperatures, thus exhibiting better oxidation resistance, creep strength, and high-temperature corrosion resistance. Therefore, it is more suitable for long-term use in oxidizing environments up to 1100°C. In contrast, standard 310 is more prone to corrosion at high temperatures and is more suitable for short-term or intermittent high-temperature applications.

Weldability of 310 and 310S Stainless Steel

Both 310 and 310S stainless steels possess good weldability and corrosion resistance, but their properties differ due to their varying carbon content. 310 stainless steel has a higher carbon content, which increases the risk of carbide formation during welding. 310S stainless steel has a lower carbon content, resulting in less carbide formation. This characteristic improves weldability and post-weld corrosion resistance. Manufacturers typically choose 310S stainless steel for welded structures because it reduces the risk of weld-related failures.
