ASTM A213 vs A312 stainless steel pipes

ASTM A213 vs A312

ASTM A213 and A312 are standards for stainless steel tubing/pipe, with A213 designated for seamless high-temperature boiler/heat exchanger tubes (thinner wall) and A312 for welded or seamless general corrosion-resistant piping (thicker wall, NPS sizes). A213 is typically used for heat transfer equipment, while A312 is used for piping systems.

What is ASTM A213 material?

ASTM A213 specifies the technical requirements for seamless ferritic and austenitic alloy steel tubes used in boilers, superheaters, and heat exchangers. Designed for high-temperature, high-pressure environments, they are primarily used in power plant boilers, superheaters, and heat exchangers. They cover two main categories: alloy steels (such as T5, T9, T22, T91) and stainless steels (such as TP304, TP316, TP321). Only applicable to seamless tubes, manufactured through cold drawing or hot rolling processes.

What is ASTM A312 Stainless Steel Pipe?

ASTM A312 specifies the technical requirements for seamless, welded, and remelted austenitic stainless steel pipes intended for pressure applications. It applies to both seamless and welded pipes (including straight seam and spiral welds), and typically requires solution annealing after welding. Widely used for transporting fluids, it is suitable for general corrosive environments.

It covers only austenitic stainless steels (such as TP304, TP316, TP316L) and duplex stainless steels (such as S31803, S32205), with nominal pipe diameters (NPS) from 1/8 inch to 30 inches (DN6 to 750 mm), and a wide range of wall thickness grades (such as SCH 10S, 40S, 80S, XXS).

Process Feature ASTM A213 (Seamless Tubes) ASTM A312 (Seamless & Welded Pipes)
Permitted Methods Seamless Only. (Welded is not permitted under this standard). Seamless, Welded (Automatic), and Heavily Cold Worked (HCW).
Starting Material Solid Round Billets / Hollow Billets. Seamless: Billets; Welded: Hot-rolled/Cold-rolled Stainless Steel Coils or Plates.
Hot Working Hot Piercing or Hot Extrusion. Seamless: Hot Piercing and Mandrel Rolling / Extrusion.
Cold Working Cold Drawing or Cold Pilgering (Commonly used to achieve precise OD/WT and high surface quality). Seamless: Cold Drawing (Optional); Welded: Continuous Roll Forming of steel strips.
Welding Process N/A Automatic Welding: TIG (GTAW), Plasma (PAW), or Laser. No filler metal is permitted for standard A312 welding.
HCW (Heavily Cold Worked) N/A Weld and base metal are cold-reduced by at least 35% to refine grain structure (improves corrosion resistance).
Heat Treatment Solution Annealing followed by rapid quenching (Water/Air). Mandatory for all grades. Solution Annealing followed by rapid quenching. Mandatory (except for certain "As-Welded" exceptions in specific codes).
