What is ASTM A240 Type 301?
ASTM A240 Type 301 is a standard specification for chromium and chromium-nickel stainless steel plate, sheet, and strip for pressure vessels and for general applications. Unlike Type 304, Type 301 stainless steel exhibits a rapid work-hardening rate. It is available in various tempered conditions (such as 1/4 hard, 1/2 hard, and full hard), in which the mechanical strength of the material is significantly elevated at the expense of partial corrosion resistance. The alloy is non-magnetic in the annealed condition but becomes magnetic upon undergoing cold working.
What Is 2D Finish Stainless Steel plate?
The 2D finish is a matte, non-reflective surface produced through cold rolling and annealing (without a final bright rolling pass); it offers excellent coating adhesion and stable dimensional accuracy. As a cost-effective finish, it is highly suitable for subsequent processing such as laser cutting, bending, welding, polishing, or coating.
ASTM A240 301 Stainless Steel 2D Finish Plate Supplier
As a professional stainless steel manufacturer and global exporter, GNEE possesses over 18 years of international export experience, serving clients in more than 80 countries across Europe, Southeast Asia, the Middle East, South America, and Africa. Operating strictly under the ISO 9001 Quality Management System, our manufacturing facilities produce stainless steel plates and sheets in full compliance with ASTM, ASME, EN, JIS, and GB standards. Each shipment is supplied with an EN 10204 3.1 Mill Test Certificate (MTC), and third-party inspections by SGS, BV, or TUV are available upon request, ensuring complete material traceability and meeting the regulatory requirements of industrial projects.

GNEE supplies ASTM A240 Type 301 2D stainless steel sheets and plates available in various tempered conditions, including annealed (soft), 1/8 hard, 1/4 hard, 1/2 hard, 3/4 hard, full hard (FH), and extra full hard (EFH). Depending on the specific temper, the typical hardness ranges from approximately 160 HV in the annealed condition to over 450 HV in the extra full hard condition, while the tensile strength escalates from approximately 520 MPa (annealed) to 1,200 MPa or higher after cold rolling. This material is highly suitable for demanding applications such as automotive spring components, rolling stock (railway vehicles), precision stampings, battery contacts, electronic hardware, conveyor systems, and structural reinforcements.

Furthermore, our 301 2D stainless steel sheets feature a stably controlled surface roughness (Ra value of 1.6–3.2 μm), which prevents cracking during stamping and bending operations. This finish provides an ideal substrate surface for subsequent downstream processing, including laser cutting, stamping, bending, welding, coating, or secondary polishing. Additionally, the procurement cost is 5%–8% lower than that of 301 2B (bright-finished) sheets.
GNEE supplies a comprehensive range of specifications for ASTM A240 301 stainless steel plates and sheets, with thicknesses ranging from 0.3 mm to 6.0 mm and thickness tolerances strictly controlled within ±0.02 mm. The width is available up to 1,500 mm, and the length can be customized to meet project requirements. We also offer precision processing services, including laser cutting, slitting, shearing, CNC machining, and custom fabrication, aimed at reducing customers' processing costs and shortening lead times.

Since Type 301 stainless steel is primarily a cold-rolled material highly valued for its high tensile strength achieved through strain hardening, it is essential that you clearly specify whether you require the material in the annealed condition or a particular temper grade (such as 1/4 hard, 1/2 hard, or full hard) when sending your inquiry. If you could provide the required thickness, temper condition (annealed or tempered/hard), and dimensions, I would be pleased to assist you in obtaining a tailored quotation.
Quality Control
Chemical Composition Analysis: Utilize handheld Positive Material Identification (PMI) to strictly control Nickel (Ni: 6.0%–8.0%) and Chromium (Cr: 16.0%–18.0%) content.
Flatness Inspection: Measure with a feeler gauge on a surface plate to ensure flatness deviation is less than 1 mm per meter, preventing plate warping during laser cutting.
Hardness Testing: Conduct tests using a Vickers (HV) or Rockwell (HRC) hardness tester.
Tensile Testing: Perform evaluations to verify both tensile strength and elongation percentage.

High-quality sea freight packaging
We guarantee delivery of 301 stainless steel sheets free from oxidation and damage. Our packaging utilizes VCI anti-rust film and thickened waterproof kraft paper for sealing, supplemented by 2 mm thick galvanized metal edge protectors to prevent deformation from physical impact. All materials are securely fastened to ISPM-15 compliant fumigated wooden pallets; the load per pallet is scientifically managed at 2–3 tonnes and secured with six high-strength steel straps in a crisscross pattern.

FAQ
What is the difference between 301 and 304?
Both 301 and 304 are austenitic stainless steels; however, 304 contains higher levels of chromium and nickel, resulting in superior corrosion resistance and greater suitability for standard manufacturing processes. In contrast, 301 has a higher carbon content and lower nickel content, giving it significant work-hardening characteristics. These properties make 301 an ideal material for manufacturing springs and high-strength, high-elasticity components, whereas 304 is well-suited for food processing and outdoor applications.
What is the difference between 301 and 301L?
The primary difference between 301 and 301L stainless steel is carbon content. Grade 301 allows up to 0.15% carbon, while 301L is a low-carbon variant containing a maximum of 0.03% carbon. This "L" (Low Carbon) designation significantly improves weldability and ductility without sacrificing the metal's high-strength and wear-resistant properties.
Is 301 stainless steel plate magnetic?
Whether 301 stainless steel plate is magnetic depends entirely on its temper (how much it has been mechanically worked).
